    I'd say it was just dumb luck. It only takes just a hair of misalignment on those fine teeth. I bought a center section once and neither axel would go completely in.

    First thing is you need to tighten the backing plate in order to take out the end play. The adjuster needs something to push against. You might have cross threaded the adjuster or maybe it's just binding because of the loose backing plate/bearing retainer. Jump to the 7:00 mark....

    Seemed that I used a Felpro hard rubber gasket last time. With everything clean and oil free I'll use 3M Black weather strip adhesive to glue the gasket to the valve cover. Then using Permatex Ultra Black or for faster setup time use Permatex "The Right Stuff" and put a 1/4" bead on the gasket...

    You might have to bend just the lower 1/2". The end can catch on the oil pan.

    Sit the manifold on without any gasket (clean and dry) and see how it fits. Should be flat without any gap on the lower part where it meets the heads.

    Did you check your pushrod length. Lots of instances where the pushrod is worn down and it doesn't activate the pump.
