You just need to connect the ground to the dash frame then. The ashtray is just attached to the dash frame. What is the other end of the ground wire attached to ?

Where is the speedometer getting its power? The engine should be grounded to the block and body. The ground cable should have a stub that goes to the radiator support and there should also be a ground strap between the bellhousing and the firewall.

Disconnecting the ground wire while the engine runs does not always indicate a "good" alternator. Some of the diodes could still be bad. Battery must be completely charged before any testing.( with a battery charger, not the alternator) Needs to show at least 12.5 volts static before load...

I would also keep an extra ECU. Tape/replace the uninsulated connector.

Everybody including you have a bad day now and then and probably were not on your best behavior that day. Cost nothing to call again. People don't stay in business by ignoring customers. Again, " Let he who is without....cast the first stone."
