I fully understand the reasons for the minimum hose rule. Any tiny length of hose can pose a risk. How many tens of millions of cars and trucks came out of Detroit with hoses? Evidently the need for vibration elimination overrules the risk :).

Carter makes a economically priced pump with filter that I installed on my 65 Coronet-stock, for that very situation. Works well.

You are correct except lighter wheel and tire combinations will improve ride quality. You should ride in my 94 2500 with a Dana 70 rear axle and the difference will become clear. Every little bit helps.

Do you see any bolts holding the radiator support in place? No? It's welded in place. You should be able to pull the combo out anyway. Take that distributor out first. One of those adjustable angle engine attachment devices would be worth renting/buying for this task.

Small slide hammer? You shouldn't have to "tap" the oil pump drive into the bushing. It should slide right in with a screw driver twisting into the camshaft gear.
