I wonder if by 69 they figured out how to avoid using rivets. I think I'm just going to weld the holes shut. The rivets don't seem to be providing anything special and I like a cleaner look....

I'm not sure what you're suggesting. Are you saying because this is a difficult place to spot weld that the factory used rivets? Or, are you saying it will be difficult for me to spot weld?

I'm restoring the fenders on my 68 Coronet and I removed these cardboard-y strips that were clipped in. I need to replace these but don't know what they're called. I know there are folks here who know. Thanks!
Thanks for your responses, everyone. I just went ahead and double checked my measurements and welded the fabricated piece on. You can see what I started with, the fabrication, and the fabbed piece welded in.
I will finish the corner and then cut out the tabs and weld the bottom.
