If the engine is not over heating at lower rpm and idle I do not think it's plugged.
Higher rpm heating is most times caused by lack of air flow.

Good thread Lloyd, to echo Greg yes there are a lot of crap lifters being sold.
I still think many break in problems come from spring pressure and install height, coil bind ect.
Mabey just me but it seems spring pressures have went up as lifter and cam quality have went down.

Ron the pre 68 383 used a different size lifter/pushrod combo.
You can not mix the two, that's why the parts suppliers just list 68 and up.
You can use the newer 68 and up sets in the older pre 68 blocks as long as you use both new push rods and new lifters.
Fran, I can not find a thing wrong with that set.
I have not spun each roller but it looks good, gears have no odd wear ect.
But it was not going back in lol.

Well we got home from our trip.
I put the front of engine together this weekend.
New chain and gears, intake set ect.
Fired the old girl up and the noise is gone.
So, it was I think the comp chain and gear set ? That is the only parts changed and that seems to have fixed it.
Still has real good...
If your 741 / 2.94 ? Gear set is in good shape. Keep it in one piece.
Get a 742 or 489 for your new gear set.
You may want to run the power tour ect. Someday. :drinks:

Fran, the engine did set for 5 days. I know like you guys I would expect a little more oil on things. One plus I did take my hand and wipe the bottom of the crank gear/chain area and had oil on it.

Last time running we looked at the gauge at temp, 35lbs idle and 65 when you give it some rpm.
What would cut flow down to the chain,and gears?
Slinger is on it and ok.
