A brief update, I switched the bolts but the sound persists. What I could see from the flexplate, nothing was cracked or broken, but the view is quite limited without removing the transmission.
I might add that the sound only appears when the car is moving, or at least the wheels are turning...
Thanks for all replies, I will inspect the flexplate and get some new bolts and hope for a quick recovery so I can get on with the rest. Have a good easter, guys.
I was unsure about the bolts on the flexplate when I assembled the machine after an overhaul some years ago, I think someone might have used some thicker ones and banged them down with a hammer or some, there are very clear marks from them in the block. After turning the converter by hand I...
I have this weird sound that started quite recently, a loud metallic one coming from (probably) the tranny. My initial thought was the flexplate bolts where I actually found a loose one but to no avail. It was a long shot since the noise only appears when in drive and a little less in reverse. I...
When I pulled up at a nearby straight road and floored the pedal, you bet ya a wide grin drew upon my face combined with various obscenities of joy shouted into the atmosphere. When I released the throttle, a feeling of stupidity came flowing through my body and I cursed myself for a bit there...
Update: Like I said before, the timing mark on the damper was about 5° off, which I compensated for when I strobed the engine. But naturally I compensated in the wrong direction, hence my timing degree read 2°, not 12... :BangHead:
The engine now runs much better without any noticable coughs...
Ok, finally. The bracket from Edelbrock didn't work at all, so I had to make my one lever. I can tell you it was a LOT more fun to drive, like night and day, but the initial problem remains. Also noticed that the acc pump doesn't give any squirt until after 3 pumps.
Yeah, I should of have done that a long time ago. I bought the cable last year, and couldn't find out how to put it. By the time I figured out someone assembled it wrong I had already switched carburetor to the carter, which lacks the correct throttle lever to attach a kickdown cable. Guess I...
I will try with a friend's distributor and see if it helps.
A small update, don't know if it matters, when putting the shifter in neutral the engine purrs just fine. Could it be something with the transmission under load? Don't have my kickdown (Lokar) connected because of no place to put it on...
I thought a lot about changing the distributor, but I have changed both the lid and put an ignitor inside along with a Pertronix coil, is there still a chance it might fail?
I tried connecting the fuel pump directly to a small bottle without any luck, but I am quite curious about the fuel pressure. The plastic fuel filter fills up nicely (sometimes), but I don't know if the carb needs a constant pressure?
I've checked for vacuum leaks, but still need to make the...
I'd be damned if I hadn't checked the timing issue, but I put it through the scope a couple of times to find some answers. What I did forget though, was that when I lined up the gears, the timing mark at the harmonic damper was approximately 5° off (see picture). I think I need to put on a...
I have been having these problems with a studdering and coughing 383 since I bought the car a year ago. If I put a little effort on the pedal it almost sounds like it’s going to die before it makes a loud sneeze in the carb and pulls off a little. Feels like maybe 100 bhp. Flooring the pedal...
Greetings from Stockholm!
Perhaps you spotted my former LeMans that was parked in a public garage in Mariehamn some years ago? I saw there were articles written about it in the local newspaper.
