Check the cam position. We had a similar experience with a 440. Cam sprocket can be installed 3 ways. Take engine guy for a ride. Cam is in wrong spot. Hope this helps you, did it on ours.

Got some measurements on the stripe, top stripe 7/32, 1/8 void, bottom stripe 1/16. This is a painted stripe and runs directly below the main body line. Asoon as I can figure out how to upload the pics I'll get them on here. Hope this helps

If you had spent as many years as I have cutting up and remanufacturing goodmark panels for GM stuff you'd know why AMD is on a pedestal. Always save as much original metal as possible. Even the OEM stuff back then was'nt always a perfect fit but AMD is way above anything else. Just my 2 cents.
