If you want to advance the timing turn the distributor in the opposite direction that it rotates when cranking. And the opposite for retarding the timing.

I did mine on my 66 Coronet, and I couldn't believe how hard I had to beat that pin. I finally gave up on the hammer and punch and got out the air hammer with punch attachment. Still wasn't real easy but that's what it took to get it out.
The water vapor is a problem, You have to run the car a long time to burn off that moisture. Otherwise you'll be putting on a new exhaust system every year.
I'd say push rod length. You can get a push rod length checking tool pretty reasonable at the usual places, Jeg's , Summit and many other places. Good Luck !
