Well that's good to know, at least I won't have to try and track down another obscure part!
Is having this larger exhaust in/out going to screw up my (mostly stock) performance... or am I actually going to get some extra horses out of the deal?
Well, I leaped before I looked and bought a 2.25" muffler for my '68 Satellite 318 thinking it would be a quick and easy swap.
Went out to the car to make sure it was a match and it looks like my tailpipe is only 1.5".
I don't even see 1.5" exhausts being sold anywhere. Did someone replace...
Picked up the full Borgeson power steering pump kit from Summit for small block/318.
Mechanic said that the radiator hose was getting in the way and he had to fashion a custom hose to get it to fit.
Obviously that means something is wrong with the setup - what do I need to get this attached...
So this brings me to my initial question - can I put a cast 318 crank in my engine? A forged 318 crank is what was in there originally. My mechanic seems to insist it be a forged crank, but I'm reading on the forums that you might be able to swap them.
Still struggling to find this part. Forged cranks are apparently very rare finds. One crank shop even said when they send out forged cranks to be reconditioned they receive cast cranks back.
Which brings me to my next thought: can I just put a cast crank in my engine? I've read in blogs here...
Hey 69Bee, how can I reach your guys in Phoenix? I want to have my mechanic call them and see about getting one shipped over for the swap. Seems impossible to find here in LA.
Luckily the mechanic who rebuilt is getting a refund for the crank 'grind', which should cover the cost of the new one. And is doing the swap for free, so it’s not the worst case scenario. Just got to put some leg work into finding this part.
I’ll end up paying him something for his labor, work...
It was turned and polished last summer. But the turning wasn't true and they took off too much material. So the journals have ended up lopsided and even more deeply gouged after only a year of use. Furthermore the sides of the journals are worn down. It's just a useless piece of metal at this point.
I had it ground last summer, but they took too much off and it wasn't true. So ended up making some nasty noises. Basically they botched the whole job and now the crank is destroyed, pitted, lopsided. So I gotta get a new one.
It's definitely steel. Maybe it isn't even the original crank...
This makes way more sense. The issue is the tube, not the stick - I should have been more clear. All the ones I've tried to buy are straight and won't fit into the hole since they need to be angled.
But, what you are saying is that I need to install the stick first, then bend it around whatever...
Can anyone help me ID the stamp # on this crankshaft?
1968 318 Satellite - it's totally shot and I need to replace, but am having a hard time verifying what cranks will fit!
I'm looking at this one: http://store.enginepartscenter.com/mobile/chrysler-318-52l-13570-p1017.aspx but can't...
It's funny how a totally easy part to replace can give a fellow such a headache.
I keep ordering oil dipsticks and they simply do not fit my 1968 Satellite 318.
Anyone have potential insights into this problem?
For anyone following this thread, in the end I had to swap the starter. Summit sent me a replacement at no cost. Hearing the new one, i now realize the first one they sent was bad out of the box. (When you hi from stock to mini the sound is different, so I assumed it was the new sound). Always...
