I do have a couple of scopes and will take a look. Should be interesting holding the scope, the phone and the blacklight underneath the car...
I've never seen the inside of this so wish me luck!
It did look like a murder scene under there! The transmission pan is clearly being sprayed with the fine mist of oil as it leaves the housing while driving.
I thought my RMS leak was finally fixed, but was still having oil dripping from the bottom of the transmission housing. I wanted to be sure it wasn't coming from the valve covers/oil sender/rear of the valley pan etc... I added a bottle of UV dye and I found (lots of) oil around the top and...
Here are my results:
I'm using the AMD repro covers on both sides and surfaces are flat all the way around (after some massaging). My passenger cover sealed on the second try using just the Moroso Perm-align gasket, no RTV. I am using studs in both heads as well as the triangular spreaders on...
I had my cluster restored a few years ago by AutoInstruments and the results were amazing. The one thing I didn't do was the conversion for electronic ignition which I didn't have at the time and wasn't expecting to do. Of course I eventually converted to a Pertronix 3 ignitor and now my tach...
This is what was left on the valve covers once I peeled off the gaskets.
I used brake cleaner to help soften up the residue, but it was a tedious job. It would have been much easier without the ridge around bottom. Whatever sealant was used was a b*tch to get off.
I was trying to avoid any sealant after spending approximately 5 hours cleaning off the old gaskets and black RTV, but it may come to that.
FYI, my passenger valve cover isn't leaking (yet) after letting the car idle for a few sessions, but no driving. I have the M/E-wagner adjustable PCV valve...
After successfully getting my rear main seal leak free (FINALLY!), I'm focusing on the valve covers. I installed studs an I'm using spreaders. Although the studs were a bit of a PIA (a few of the holes had to really be cleaned up) they make it so much easier to align the gasket. I bought the...
FOUND IT!!!!
I was doing bulkhead work last night and somehow the bolt ended up in my wiring parts box!!!!! I'm so relieved.
I learned a few things as well, thanks everyone!
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I've checked every square inch of the garage, every pocket, every sofa/chair I've sat in over the past few days. I even checked the shop-vac and the trash as well. Of course I've also looked in every nook and cranny under the car from above and below.
Of course...
I'm able to get the scope down pretty far and I think I'm looking at the lifters, but nothing there.
They are the stock heads. The bolt that holds the valve covers aren't too small and I'm surprised if it's down there that I wouldn't be able to see it.
Bottom line, it could have travelled...
I'm in the process of changing the valve cover gaskets on my '69 383. I'm ditching the current bolts for ARP studs. I have the valve cover off and I was using one of the original bolts to make sure the threads on the head were clear as I was having a hard time getting the APR studs in. I thought...
