If you have a new Holley blue pump, are you running a regulator? That Holley pump is more than capable to feed your needs without the mechanical pump.

Always get the ignition/timing set first, then adjust the carb. I'd be going over the basics: correct plugs (already mentioned), good wires (test the resistance of each one)...

From what I've read, it's hit or miss with folks getting lift out of an XHD spring. The extra heavy duty springs are biased (as are SS springs) and modeled after the stock springs of a 440 or Hemi car. You may not get lift, but you'll have less spring wrap.
