It has been a while since I posted. I finally got the 440 back from the machine shop about 7 weeks ago. I decided that I probably want to redo the k member and then put the engine together and mount it up and slide it all under the car.
I have read through a number of the posts on here and...
I pray for his recovery.
I would just make sure he gets all of the help he needs. There may be times when he is in a place where he is not able to advocate for himself, so you may have to jump in.
Not sure what types of recovery groups may be available, but seems like being able to share with...
Ok. The information we have all been waiting for.
I dropped off parts with the machinist today, Kevin, at Arnolds Motor Supply in Ankeny, IA. We had a very good conversation and I appreciated him taking an hour of his time to talk to me.
He indicated that all of the things we had talked...
I have taken a look at them. They are twice as much as I was really wanting to spend. Looks like the are very nice, just too pricey.
I did go ahead and order the PowerBond. With a price match it brought it down to $149.78. A new pulley price is too much, so I measured the old pulley and as...
I was considering these three harmonic balancers:
PowerBond PB1112ST:

Pro Race Products Pro Sport 34279:

Romac 0215...
I started researching the damper/harmonic balancer. Seems like there are some that like the fluid dampers and others say stick with the elastomer.
Some of these appear to be too tight going on the crank. Others have an issue with holes lining up.
I have looked on Summit, Mancini Racing, 440...
So, the picture you are showing is not the service manual I assume? So, you are saying that the factory spec minimum is 2.7495 and if the crank guy grinds it to that spec, the 119m bearings would put me right at .0030 clearance on the mains? I assume you are talking about the standard 119m and...
I have talked to the machinist multiple times and he has never given me a reason to think he does not know what he is doing.
I just have not had in depth conversation about grinding to the low side and these finer details. I am sure most people just bring in there blocks in and he takes care...
I think this is where it is a little confusing. If I tell the machinist to grind to the low side of the tolerance, let’s just say on the main journals, this assumes he knows what I am talking about. So, the factory main would have measured at 2.750 inches. Did we say that factory clearance...
It will be interesting to see what the numbers are. I am sure it is not his first rodeo, but it is always hard to tell how detailed a person is until you see their work.
The gasket sets came today and was surprised that the pistons showed up as well. I am waiting on the rod bearings and need...
I pretty much read verbatim what Challenger340 had posted. He had not ground the crank at that point. Told him the exact tolerances I was looking for, per the previous posts.
If he did not get it found quite far enough, then he can always go a little further.
Unfortunately, I do don’t have...
Well, got the piston rings and main bearings today. Pistons will probably be here next week.
I keep forgetting to ask about the harmonic balancer. It has a small piece broken off of it. How big of a piece needs to be missing before it causes a vibration? The missing piece is on the inner...
Yes, made sure to tell him. I think it sounded like he will have to fit it. I am interpreting that as he will check clearances once I have the bearings to him and he may have to polish to get the clearance correct. I am sure with the number of different bearings in the marketplace, they are...
Talked to the machinist today and he was getting ready to grind the crank, so progress is being made.
I got the gasket sets ordered today. I talked to the Edelbrock guy I have talked to a couple of times and he had not seen the Fel Pro 1215 before and said he normally just puts the valley pan...
Thank you for the replies.
looks like there are a couple of kits, FS7891PT11:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/fel-fs7891pt11
And the KS2110:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/fel-ks2110?rrec=true
Looks like the first one has a few more gaskets to it and maybe some o-rings. Is it worth...
Got some orders placed:
1. Clevite CB527P10 rod bearings
2. Icon 9953-030 pistons
3. Sealed Power E-424K30 piston rings
4. Sealed Power 119M10 main bearings
Just need to look at the gaskets now.
Looking at the Fel-Pro 8519PT1 for head gaskets. I tried looking to see if they were included in...
I think the 119m is worth taking a look at.
119m is a bi-metal vs Clevite ms2324p, which is a tri-metal. What is best?
The Clevite description in their catalog says wide full groove. What does that mean? Is the bearing wide vs narrow and has a full groove or is the groove wider than...
I was not sure what the difference was and I found this picture:
So, the bottom main bearing cap is the early version, pre-1974. The top one is late version. So, with mine being a 1969, it should take the bearing with a narrow flange.
The thing I think that is interesting is that in the...
