On Scott's speed shop he made reference to a shortened input shaft transmission for a 400. My 64 Sport Fury once had a 383-4speed. It now has a 440-4speed. I'm building a 512 stroker 400 to put in it instead. It's an 833, not sure how many spline yet, I haven't pulled it apart yet. Using a 440...
Good to know. I'll build it myself, though. Leaning towards 440 source, and will spec the parts for sure. Thank you for the input, I value all opinions greatly.
My same thoughts on the machine shop. Ironically, I do machine work for BMW motorcycles, have preferred products, but won't push customers away if they want to provide their own. And thank you for the specs on your engine. I'm really ignorant on cams, trying to learn. On my motorcycle projects...
I'd be interested to know what you did for a cam, if your build was mostly street. And thank you for your input. 512 makes sense for the same money, I just wondered if it was pushing the envelope.
Pricing to be in the same ballpark, my machine shop seems to be dead set against 440 source, stating that he has seen problems, and his biggest is that parts are sourced from overseas. Specifically I'm looking at the 400 block, 470 or 500 stroker kit. (Leaning to 470, more street use) he says...
Going to build 500ci, 400 stroker. Wow! These price tags are painful. Scat kit is just under 3k. Block went to machine shop for cleaning and sonic testing. Checked out OK. Now to deburr engine, enlarge oil passages, will take back for boring and cleaning after machining. Pretty ugly right now.
My buddy passed, I bought his car from the estate. Came with 440, 4 speed, new top. Got running, installed new Tru Trac and retained 3:23 gears. Removed interior, fenders, trunk, hood, and blasted. Took interior to upholstered, ordered material for seats.
Mine wasn't the right one. If someone could check my math. overall 1.558, base circle 1.232, multiply by 1.5=.489 The closest I saw was a .484 cam. I'm building a 470 (400) stroker. I wonder if this would be a good cam. Sorry swingergabe
