Cranky,
Thanks as always. i just spoke to my mechanic and he said based on what he saw with the distributor, that he is 95% sure that it is the drive gear. Guy is 59 years old and has worked on a number of my family's cars.
The link to the drive gear by Summit was helpful, and in fact, I...
Guys,
All good points. looks like I am going to have to dig a bit deeper on this issue. The bushing may be worn out too. I would think that if an experienced mechanic looked at it that the timing chain would not be loose, but you never know.
thanks for the help and guidance.

Hey guys,
I was in the midst of doing my timing this weekend and it was varying at partial throttle about 5 to 7 degrees. I get some ping at WOT on the highway and decided to check the timing. We took the distributor off and saw some play in there which was attributed to the oil pump drive...

I appreciate it. The new 489 case I bought is rebuilt with new bearings all set up with 3.55's in it - I saw the yellow marking glop on the gears so I am pretty sure it was all adjusted. Bought it from a very highly rated eBay seller that I have grown to trust.

The entire "drop" or "center chunk" will be swapped.
Do any of those on here have any advise for me? I am not a mechanic by any stretch and will be doing...

Cranky - if I bought a whole new 489 center chunk with gears in it already - would that bolt up to my 741 rear? The seller states that the 489 already has the "smaller" yoke.
68 Satellite Here - I would be in the market for a few parts if it is in good condition.
Need wiper washer pump, dimmer dial switch, etc - put me on the list if you pick it up.
That's a good point. I wish I could. I just dropped my small bankroll on my car now. I can't even watch the show anymore. I get pissed when I see cars for less money than I paid roll across the block. I guess the labor is what killed me.
Oh well, I did it my way and I like the car. It's...
