The car: 1972 Satellite Wagon.
The motor: 1976 360 with unidentified oil pan. Sump is towards the front.
The complication: The engine is far away from here. We need to be sure it'll actually fit, but we don't have any way to compare directly... and we're pretty sure the new oil pan...
Wow. She's GORGEOUS. Living up here in the rust belt, I can only dream of cars in that state of repairs. I've got my '74 Satellite Custom off at the body shop for the winter, and like I said, got this wagon's spittin' image '72 up on jack stands in the garage. If I can find some way to get...
AWESOME WAGON. I just put its twin up on jack stands in my garage... OK, mine's a '72, it's not a Satellite Custom, and it's a small block car. But it's the same color, and looks verrrrry similar. I just got my '74 Satellite wagon on the road too. I'm deep into wagons. Deeeeeeep. If there's...
Hey, is anyone making adaptors that'll let you put an axle designed for rubber isolators in a car that's not? I've got a '72 Satellite Wagon, and an 8.75" axle that would fit a '73.
Actually, it's a little more complicated than that. The axle's out of a '72 New Yorker (C-body axle width is...
Oh, I should point out that all the photos that go with the songs were taken by the band... so yeah, one of the cars is a chebbie. But if you had a photo like that of a holeshot like that one, wouldn't you find a way to use it? :)
Funny you should ask... the band I'm in has a few songs about cars... and given that the band's called the Rust Belt Hotrods (and that 2 of the 3 of us are die-hard Mopar nuts), that should be no surprise.
Pure Hell on the Straightaway
("Exhaust is rumbling, 440 running, she's pretty quick...
As far as I know, a 'doba K-frame will fit a '73 B-body. I mean, 1979's pretty late for a B-body, and 1973's pretty early for a spool-type K-frame. But it seems like they should swap.
The K-frames might not be exactly the same, but they should be very close. I think they might have...
OK, this is starting to make a little more sense for me. I've got weird tastes. I tend to favor cop-car acceleration and like mild gearing... probably because I prefer long distance highway use over drag racing. It sounds like my preferred setup is more suited to this kind of driving.
The...
Check Cordobas and station wagons.... but yeah, BB K-frames can be kinda tough to come by. I was lucky enough to be pulling apart a BB car with a low milage engine and a rebuilt front end.
I put a 400 in my small-block Satellite wagon. Swapped K-frames and installed poly biscuits at the same time. It was totally worth the effort.
If your parts car has a big block, it most likely has a big block K-frame. Check the vin.
OK, so I'm hearing a lot of people saying that 360 heads are a bad idea on a 318, mostly 'cause they'll kill what little compression a 318 has. But then I've seen X-heads on a 318 (not mine) that ran like a champ. (Or at least it did until the owner swapped in a 340 6-pack cam. After that it...
OH! I forgot to add, if that motor's really only got 40,*** miles on it, it's probably an awesome candidate for fussing around with. A nice solid block like that? Prime pickin's.
Um, and also--it's never a bad idea to check your local boneyards for Diplomat or Grand Fury cop cars. I...
Interesting thread. I totally agree with what I'm reading here... 318's an awesome engine for ordinary driving, and there's a ton you can do to hop them up, even staying totally low-tech.
Here's my 2¢, probably too late to make much difference:
1) Newer Magnum heads'll bolt onto an LA...
I'm gettin' positive vibes about the upcoming car season... good news for me, since my Mopar situation has been a complete cluster-foul-up for the last couple of years (as I may have mentioned).
'Course, that means I've got to find a way to make them fit in my ridiculously crazy schedule...
Well. It was warm enough up here for me to get outside and change the oil in my daily driver today. While I was out there, I figured I'd better get the '74 Satellite running for a little while, to juice up the battery, keep the fuel in the carb fresh, and keep everything oiled.
While I...
Anything's possible, but I'm not so sure it'd be very easy. The redesign at the end of '72 was pretty thorough, including wheelbase. One thing to consider is that there's an extra body line on the '71-72 car that's not present on the '73-74. So you'd probably have to swap fender extensions or...
+1 on the "Any B-Body big block headers," but I'd stick with 1973 and up.
We put a NOS pair of Blackjacks on my '74 Satellite wagon. They needed tons of hammer-work. Of course, we were running the newer style starter (like for a Diplomat cop car) and I wanted to keep the column-shift. So...
