I say trust the engineers at the oil companies and use the oil that is formulated for "racing and classic cars". There is a few. They cost a little more than the modern formulations, but they are made for flat tappet cams. No need to speculate and worry about what you are mixing up. You probably...
Show us some pictures of the engine and we might be able to help you. You will have to get under the car to see the casting date. The pad on the top front of the engine should have a date stamp.
What are you trying to do with it?
Probably too rich. Find out what the factory jetting was on the 3310 and go down at least 6 sizes for your altitude. Advance the timing until it's hard to crank then back off a little.
Probably not the best intake manifold for a heavy car either. Perfomer or a stock one would make it more...
What kind of car is it? Not relevant, but I am curious. Maybe show us some pictures of it.
Sounds like it has potential. Maybe that stock cam would be a big improvement on the low end torque.
Keep that old camshaft and lifters in order because it sounds like there is nothing wrong with it other than needing to have the timing chain put on correctly. Just a couple of pushrods and gaskets away. Already broke in, even.
Bent pushrods probably means valves hitting pistons. Check the timing chain for too much stretch and maybe try some thicker head gaskets. Not the cams fault. The cam that you have is probably a good cam for that car. Something else is going on. Flat top pistons with no valve relief can only take...
"Street/race" probably like a280 - 292ish. Too big for that low compression 400,so it's a dog down low. We always picked the "street/race" back then, even if it was a daily driver. Whatever gear you had. How's that for "crystal balling it"?
The Hemi came with either automatic or 4 speed, so either is a good muscle car transmission. I like to keep them however they were built at the factory, either way.
It took me about 30 minutes, stress free, to use "the tool" out and in. I am almost tempted to sell "the tool" now. I dont think I will ever need it again. But maybe...
