Gas has been an issue as long as I can recall. In the mid '70s for my drag car, I mixed AV 100 gas 50/50 with my 12.4 CR motor. Ran great. Even when they went to LL 100, worked great. I even tried the purple military 140 (helicopter) stuff. AV gas can help.
Back in the day, mid '70's I mixed 100LL with the premium available with 12.3 CR. It worked great. With todays non oxy, I'm sure 100LL 50/50 would work fine with iron heads and 10.5 to 11 CR.

The backfire may have broken the power valve. Normally looks like float level. Try opening the end carbs a tiny bit. But I have no experience with the mechanical end carbs.
