Manifolds on my Charger since 1985. That means I should be 104 years old :). Sometimes I feel like it. I do care about performance, and the car is no stranger to the track. To each his own. And like Lew said, for me, the camshaft would be important in the header-manifold decision.
I ran several sets of the 17747 mufflers for 20 years on my 440 car, auto with manifolds and 3.23. I liked them. They would drone a bit around 2000 rpm. They are definitely louder than a replacement muffler.
There really isn’t a “limit”, but probably at 500-525 hp, you are starting to give up some hp in most cases, and you are starting down the path of diminishing returns.
There are guys making 850 hp with 2 1/2” exhaust. Obviously you would only do this to meet class restrictions.
No one has questioned that headers make more power.
The referenced article is exactly what I’m referring to in my above post. It’s not applicable to the OP question and has far too little information to draw any meaningful conclusions for any application.

I cannot remember seeing or hearing a true apples to apples comparison with all of the set-up details. Not all 400 hp motors are created equal. Motor build details matter. Nick's 18 hp on a 400 hp 383 with a mild (4.7% for those that are math...

To the OP - I don’t know what to say other than to put on what ever exhaust you want. But to think your motor needs 3” exhaust is silly. 2.25” is probably the right size.

Did you watch both videos? I think these are great examples that show what you are asking. On the closer to stock engine, i.e. about 400 hp, there was less than 20 hp difference between headers and manifolds. In the car with full exhaust probably less difference. Put in a tight LSA, big...

First, I don't believe that the 1967 383 had hp exhaust manifolds.
Second, the 67 hp manifolds (that came on 440s) also had the driver side exit clocked...
Tubing is measured and identified by outside diameter. You have either 2" OD, or 2 1/4" OD. Factory 383's had 2 1/4" OD compression bent exhaust to the muffler. The tail pipes could be smaller.
My Charger ran 12s at 109 mph. The Moroso calculator has it at about 450 hp. The car had 2 1/4"...

I would say, generally speaking, as the cam overlap increases, the advantage for headers increases over manifolds, and shorty headers would be someplace in the middle. The shorty headers would be closer to the long tube headers on a mild motor, closer to manifolds on a more radical...
Size of the exhaust pipes and type of mufflers will have a bigger inpact on loudness than headers verses manifolds.
