    Next installment in the saga

Be very careful when draining and removing the pan. Look for any small parts like balls or springs before you dump all the fluid. Maybe something in the shift linkage or valve body came apart. Just an idea....

Ok, I thought you may have been asking about an early transmission with factory cable operation. I have zero experience with aftermarket shifter.

What you working on? With a shift cable? Is this an aftermarket shifter? Or is the car an early 62-65 cable shift car? The early cars cable has a quick connect fitting inside the trans. Maybe it popped off?

    Starting issue 1973 Dodge 400

New engine rebuild may be tight until it wears in. I repeat my suggestion to physically turn it over by hand to see if there is a problem. I worked in an engine shop years ago, and have seen new engines be assembled when the bearing clearances were too tight. It happens...... As far as the new...

    Starting issue 1973 Dodge 400

Sounds like the engine has a lot of internal friction. Like it may be seizing up. Can you put a 1-1/4" socket on the crank pulley bolt and turn the engine by hand?

    Rear end whine

My Dana 60 got pretty whiney at 145K miles. New bearings fixed it right up. And I mean pinion and carrier bearings inside as well as just wheel bearings.

    Overheating left bearing 8-3/4 rearend

Have you actually checked the axle for bent yet? Jack the car up with the rear on jackstands. Put it in gear with engine running and watch to see if there is wobble in the flange. Do this with the brake drum off so you can see the flange. Then do it again with the brake drum on to see if the...

Big Block 4 bolt valve covers

My 64 Plymouth has 6 bolt valve covers.

    Overheating left bearing 8-3/4 rearend

Possible the axle is bent a bit?

Fixed! Changed 727 park lock cover gasket and now have clicking noise when rolling. Park cable adjustment???

Sounds like you will need to adjust it. The parking sprag will make a ratcheting noise if you try to put it in park and the car is rolling.

Death came knocking and took my Coronet

Another vote on check the convertor bolts. Had it happen on a poly 318 in an old pickup. One backed out and knocked badly. Even "machined" a shallow groove in the lower block flange. Replaced one bolt, and tightened them all up good. Drove that old truck for a few more years, no problem.

    White Exhaust Smoke

Not to be a jerk, but I hope you know to NEVER pull the radiator cap when an engine is hot? (I can tell you are new to old cars..) I had a buddy in high school that pulled the cap on his Barracuda. The hot water blew out and scalded him badly on his face, neck, and hands.

    8-3/4 Rear Axle Bearings

How many times have you seen, or heard of, a car having a rear wheel and axle come out. It happened twice to people I knew when I was a kid in high school, and we would beat on our old early 60's "hot rods". And how many times have you seen pictures or video of cars loosing axles or wheels at...

    8-3/4 Rear Axle Bearings

I have had to replace axles with grooves cut in them by worn out bearings. Much more expensive than just replacing a bearing with an inner race. This is 1/2 ton, not the full floaters like 3/4 ton and bigger trucks.

    8-3/4 Rear Axle Bearings

You mean the pickups that have the bearings that ride directly on the axle shaft instead of using and inner race? Yeah, I have had to replace complete axle shafts along with worn out bearings due to THAT stupid design. And those are still roller bearings, although they run flat rather than being...

    White Exhaust Smoke

Looking at the picture of the engine, I don't see a power brake booster behind the master cylinder.

    8-3/4 Rear Axle Bearings

So, as I am understanding it. The green bearings are fine. As long as you drive your car easy. Don't go around curves too fast. Hmmmm... I live in the mountains. No thanks.

    White Exhaust Smoke

Coolant leaking into the chambers should produce steam, not smoke. I still think you are getting a little oil past the valve stem seals. Oil smoke is such a very light blue, that you can easily mistake it for white if it's just a little bit. It's a slant 6, and could possibly still have the old...
