I did the 1/8” drain plug in mine as well, (at the center bottom) when I was installing a new 3rd section. The housing gives plenty of meat to hold the plug. No concern for interference with internals. Wrapped plug with Teflon tape. It just needs to be snugged up - not cranked - to seal. So far...

My .02 cents from an old timer at a NAPA I overheard talking about synthetic oil in older motors. Older motors do not have the tight tolerances of today’s motors and they don’t tolerate synthetic oil like new motors can. Makes sense to me and I would say that applies to trannys as well.

I ended up using a dental pick also, once I knew there was no groove. Inserting the pinion backwards didn’t work for me or I was doing it wrong. Noted on the ring - just habit. I wear gloves and took them off to take the picture.
