Finding solution to leaking valve cover gaskets...

I struggled with the same issue and finally cured it with cometic gaskets. They are expensive and they are sold one per package so you have to buy two to get the set. I can't say if they're that good or it was simple dumb luck but I don't have a leak now

    How important is compression?

I agree with the above statements. If it's a street engine, build it to run on pump gas. In a drag race engine, you're only concerned about 1/4 mile at a time and running 112 leaded fuel or higher is acceptable to get all you can get out of the engine.

    Aftermarket shifter choices?

Years of use and abuse makes for a a lot of slop in the shifter and a good rebuild can help a lot but they are what they are and I know of no way to truly make the originals a short throw. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong.

    Ignition Coil

Don't think it matters. You could check the manuals to see if they are the same part number or just grab an accel coil from anywhere.

    Small block guru wanted

Sounds reasonable. Of course the week link is the short block. You are increasing the flow in and out and that's a good thing but will put more stress on the older bottom. Curious if you did a compression test? Other than that, you may find that 750 is a bit much and is probably going to run...

    Gentlemen question on PCV system.

PVC should always be on a street engine. The trouble is that a stock PCV was engineered to operate correctly with a stock engine, to make matters worse, aftermarket PCV valves are pretty generic. I run an adjustable valve like moparlore recommended you check out and they work well. You can take...
