In park or neutral Does engine rev OK?
When engine is under load the cylinder pressure needs stronger spark. recommend checking ignition coil, voltage to coil, ignition wire resistance, and proper ignition advance in distributor.
On my 72 Plymouth I found problems with the old stock wiring...
For a street car I'd go with the An Inside Look at the New Edelbrock AVS2 Carburetor
The annular boosters would help low speed throttle response and it is easy to tune.
Usually the problem is the mechanical fuel pump getting hot, try eliminating it and going with electric pump along with pressure regulator with fuel return so fuel don't dead head and build heat.
Scoop with small round gauze filter, did not want to cut hood so just ran with it off. Helps keep it cooler also as I vapor lock on hot days.
Managed to fit this manifold under flat 72 Satellite hood w/440 with 2"drop base. Front of air cleaner top barely touches hood, so I still might be...
After I put in a air/fuel gauge I got to see a couple things.
Aluminum scoop with small. Round gauze filter would start to run rich at higher rpm. Test without filter did not go rich, so filter did not flow enough air at high RPMs.
Found baseplate with 2” of drop and 3” filter would cause...
You need something like this https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-26-503
then you can mount gauge inside and watch pressure while driving.
You don’t want fuel hose going into cab
I'd go AVS2 and add the jetting kit and wide-band air/fuel gauge to tune. Gauge allows you to see what carb is doing, saves a lot of time and guessing.
Try heating it in boiling water to soften it.
The first replacement grommet failed got another one from different company (forget who i ordered from) and it has lasted so far. Seems all grommets are not the same.
Same problem on 71 Satellite with 440 and headers, not enough airflow around fuel pump.
Non alcohol fuel helps a lot, costs a lot more too. Have taken hood off which helps along with non-metal spacer. Still have problems in 90+ days
Going to try electric fuel pump with pressure regulator...
Also try filling tube with sand to help reduce crushing while bending.
Use hacksaw or cutting wheel as tube cutter work hardens metal as you rotate and tighten which makes flaring more difficult.
Check voltage at coil.
I had low voltage at coil, engine would idle and rev ok until I put a load on the engine, then it would fall on it face, backfire until I got out of throttle. Low voltage due to corrosion on electrical contacts, I did not need ballast resister so I ran relay from batt to...
