I had electrical issue that was intermittent. Found wire corrosion on the inside, outer insulator looked good but inside was brown with spots of green corrosion.
Does it rev ok in park or neutral?
Weak spark will cause problems when cylinder pressure builds, stumbling and backfire.
Check for proper voltage at coil. Worn/bad; coil, rotor, cap, spark plugs, ballast resistor, check resistance of spark plug wires.
Also check fuel pressure under load at...
I now just use a separate push button switch for the starter. It is mounted out of sight under steering column, turn on ignition and push start button. Wiring and all connectors were old and corroded and am also using HEI that needed full voltage to coil.
This set up helped a when a buddy...
After using HEI module and mini starter, The Plymouth does not sound like a MOPAR starting. Starts right away and does not have gear reduction cranking sound.
Using stock electronic distributor with module on firewall. Also had to run new wiring as there was too much voltage drop using old...
Would also recommend replacing wire with new. If having strange electrical problems.
Had charging problem caused by wires having internal corrosion. Outer insulation looked ok, but inside the wire was discolored with some green here and there. Also had to use relay for full battery voltage for...
Is the distributor seating all the way down on manifold? With no gasket can you check if dist base seats all the way down.
Milled block, heads or manifold or components that have dimensions that are off might not be letting Distributor tighten down correctly.
My flickering lights were caused by internal wire corrosion. Insulating coating looked OK but inside copper was discolored with some green, also had voltage drop from the key. Ran new wire and I'm using a key activated solenoid connected to battery for 12v reference. Lights solid now.
I put a button under the dash on steering column for the starter. Just turn on key and press button for starter.
Also put a latched 12v solenoid on the column keyed start circuit. If you try to use key for the starter, the solenoid shuts down battery power until hidden switch is used to...
I was having ignition problems with stock type ECU and Ballast resistors along with factory wiring that was corroding internally (found corrosion after replacing it). Got fed up chasing my tail replacing components and ended up using HEI module mounted on firewall with remote ignition coil...
I also had to use relay for battery power, had too much voltage loss using old stock wiring. Would start and rev, but under load it would backfire through carb. Also using separate button for the starter.
For the pulsing problem I replaced all wires from alternator to regulator and used relay to get battery power.
Had tried different alternators and regulators to try to solve problem. Also bypassed ammeter to try to fix it and remove a known failure point.
A vote for old cable going bad internally.
I’ve replaced most all my wiring on 72 due to wire going bad from internal corrosion. Looked OK but once you removed insulation there was discoloration and corrosion.
By replacing wire and using relays fixed; dim headlights, light switch heating up...
My only complaint is with using HEI module and mini starter is it don’t sound like a MOPAR starting.
A little gas wait a moment and it fires right up. Did have to use relay to connect battery power as original wiring (even bypassing ballast had too much voltage drop. Would start and rev ok...
turn signal switch in column caused me a bunch of grief. All light circuits go through it.
Instead of replacing it, previous owner rigged up switches for blinkers. Did not realize it was the turn switch until after replacing all under dash and wiring harness.
Also recommend using relays for...
I was having charging problems, chased it down to corrosion, near terminals and even inside wire under insulator. Ended up running all new wire on alternator to battery using a relay to get full battery voltage and new wire from regulator to alternator. Also bypassed ammeter and used solid wire...

Recommend by passing ammeter and running lights with relays(bonus is brighter lights). Also had to run ignition with relay to get full voltage to coil...
FYI, I had also eliminated ballast resistor to run HEI module.
Was not getting enough voltage that was causing engine to backfire under load. Would rev in neutral fine. Had to use relay to get batt voltage to coil. Again, old bad connectors/wiring causing voltage drops.
Had the problem of lights pulsing, especially at idle. Tried bypassing amperage gauge and found connector at bulkhead heat damaged and a bit corroded, bypassed by drilling out bulkhead so wire can pass thru. Still had flickering lights.
Had alternator go out, replacement worked for a couple...
Can also take the bulkhead on the firewall apart and clean them.
I had been having my headlights pulsing at low speeds. Had an alternator go bad and replaced it, worked for a week or two then still having charging problems. New alternator checks OK so pick up new regulator, still having...
