We have a lot Freightliner aka Diamler, trucks that are line trucks that sit in fields for high line work and they get chewed on pretty regularly. It’s a environmentally friendly move I was told.. My sons Benz has them too, what a piss poor idea.
May not hurt to check the timing chain for slip if all else fails. The others have posted something to look at,chain slop can cause problems. Keep us posted .. very curious.
You guys offered tons of great advice my only comment to offer up is make sure you use a fine tooth ratchet.. every little click is a benefit in the right spots. IMO
I would remove the starter and install a known good one BUT I would put a bar on the lower crank bolt, spin by hand just to verify no issues to surprise you..
That switch and plug was used into the 90s on Dodge trucks including Dakotas. That will make it readily avail for you at the local parts house. Just buy a good brand switch or you could have problems with the internal breaker being weak and make sure the new pug tail has the correct wire gauge...
