Rover experts will note the engine photo is from a later SD1, confusingly named the 3500S, with the same engine. The US import version of the SD-1 had Bosch FI, to comply with CA smog standards. 8.5: CR, a real dog. Great car tho'!
My 70 Rover 3500S (Buick 215 V8) had 2 SU carbs, feeding opposite sides, a minor ram effect. Originally, it used the standard GM mechanical pump, but suffered frequent vapor lock...even in Blighty! So...the export V8s came with an in-tank electric pump. If the car sat for days, I wold turn the...
The rams are effectively supercharging: the mass of air/fuel acquires momentum in the tube, and at least in the sonic rams, the sound wave is timed to hit the opening intake valve. Hence the hp loss if you switch out to 2x4 in line. Look at any contemporary car, you will find a form of ram...
i pulled the carb, disassembled, replaced the left needle valve, re-set the floats, and...much better starting and no fuel leaks! Thanks for the advice.
My 400 with 4bbl Edelbrock 4bbl usually refuses to start, then leaks fuel out of the left front side while i am cranking. I have rebuilt the carb and set the float levels at least twice! Help please.
if you want, make your own spacer, vs buying from Edel. 1/4"x28 bolt and bi-threaded "turnbuckle" connector. Saw of head of bolt, interpose in linkage, and adjust shift points!
Thanks for replies. Fuel pump is brand new, tank new, lines except pipe to tank new, checked float levels at least 4 times! Maybe I shall change out the fuel filter and see if that makes a difference.
I finally have sorted this carb so that it starts, runs strongly, and doesn't spill any fuel. Pressure set at 4-5, fuel in transparent filter, but...if I accelerate up the hill to my house, the engine slows, and even dies. It is then difficult to start, despite fuel in filter. I don't think...
Need more help, please: Car still starts roughly, but when warmed a bit, runs fine and strong. But...i live on a hill. If i accelerate up the hill the engine will falter and stall at the top. Yesterday, almost cranked the battery dead before it restarted. Fuel seen in clear filter, pressure set...
I obtained another pressure valve from eBay. the 2-6psi regulators all look alike, and sure enough, this 3rd example suffered from incorrect threads, and metric wrenches needed. I dressed the threads a bit, installed it, and it works well and does not leak. So far the car starts and runs so much...
Thanks to all. I reduced the pressure, temporarily, by inserting narrow diameter plugs into the hose. It now reads 6.5, but I am sure that the flow is less. Runs much better, no flooding, no gas exuding everyplace. A new dial type regulator arrives tomorrow, will let you know how that works...
I have attempted to tune this vgc E 1407 at least 4 times. All parts renewed. Today I re-checked the float levels and set them correctly to 7/16", tried to start the engine, and no go, plus backfire. Took off the top again and found fuel everyplace, including in the wells for the secondary...
Thanks to all. Yes the idle screws are about 3 turns. I have checked the new float levels twice.
But...why the drops of raw fuel? Wouldn't that make it rich?
Choke does set fast idle, but quickly heats and the cam rotates clockwise and the fast idle screw is no longer in contact. Will increase...
Fires immediately when cold, but then requires much accel pump to run. I adjusted the choke to about 1/4" open when cold. Today I noticed fuel drops from the main nozzle. Would this be floats too high, or pressure too high. I do have a gauge, and restrict the pressure to 4-6 psi.
Thinking my locking cap was not sealing on my 63 Fury, I replaced it with a tight one. Then...on a hot day, full tank, fuel leaked out of the sender hole, which had been tightly installed. I went back to the loose, locking cap, no leaks up hill, and no pressurization any more.
I took the air filter off in the gas station to verify that the accel jets squirted. They did. Why would the air filter suppress the fire? Oxygen can certainly get in.
I made a mistake, I think, by continuing to crank during the fire, with the engine not running. Reason: in General Aviation, if...
It is a fairly new E 1407, which i rebuilt, mostly to clean out years of crud. I had trouble setting the new floats, so i used the old, which seemed perfect. I shall re-adjust choke and idle jets, and insulate...and carry fire extinguisher! Thanks to all!
My 63 SF with a 70 400 and Edelbrock 1407 quit suddently, driving up hill in heat. I thought it might be empty tank, so rolled into station and it took only 13gal.
then it wouldn't start, and somebody yelled "pump it" so i did.
It started, and then backfired and burst into flame. Fortunately...
