Motive Gear set. The pinion bearing sat all the way flush because it's got a matching radius. BTW, thanks for your earlier post. The excellent info you provided was just what I needed. You and DVW convinced me that I was doing it at least halfway right.
Now if it holds up!
Well, after the helpful responses, this is where I ended up. Zero shims under the inner pinion bearing. Guess I'm gonna have to accept this, I'm all out of adjustment options.
This is with 30 in/lbs. of pinion preload and .008 backlash. Any other suggestions (other than pay someone...already got...
OK, thanks. I have another question though- I have already removed the original beveled shim from under the inner pinion bearing and replaced it with a couple from the gear kit that are slightly thinner. Is that kosher? Starting to make me a little nervous. It seems like I'm getting the pattern...
First time I've tried setting up my own gear. Last time I paid a guy to set my 3.91 up...sounded like a freight train coming, drove it from my kids house to mine and sheared 6-7 teeth off the ring gear. When I pulled it, the pinion had about 1/4" of end play.
So here I am, schlepping and...
Ordered (online) a new 3.73 ring and pinion for my 741 case. Opened it up and found a 29 spline pinion, opposite of the existing10 spline yoke I was planning on using. New pinion has 7/8" thread and larger lock nut than the 10 spline.
The question is, can I get a 29 spline yoke that uses the...
Here's the update- finally got around to adding a return spring to the kickdown lever. Didn't realize that that there was about 1-1/2" of travel to the front of the trans that doesn't get taken up without a spring.
Fired it up and drove it, and surprise! It shifted at the expected rpm's...
My valve body has a Transgo TF2 shift kit installed, with the appropriate holes drilled. Second one I've done, and first time I've had any issues. I set up the cables in a number of different configurations, and still shifting late into 3rd, and only when I let off the accellerator. I'd be happy...
I have a brand new rebuilt 727 with the exact same 2-3 shift issues. 1-2 shifts as expected,
2-3 shifts late and only when Iet off the accelerator. Also using a cable setup for kickdown. Waiting to hear the fix for this one!!
Yep, only lost pressure once. I did polish the valve, but it didn't really need it. I just got done driving it around. 35lb. at idle 75lb. running. Guess I'll just watch it close from now on. No idea what happened, but I know I'm guessing it sucked air somehow.
Well, I did the oil change this morning with a new filter, stuck the priming rod down there and spun it. Took about 5-10 seconds and was making 75lbs. of pressure. I can't figure it out. Is it possible that when I leaned on the brakes the oil sloshed forward and the pickup sucked air? I have no...
