Road noise reduction: What worked for you?

Gotta say my ‘64 Sport Fury is one of the quieter ones I’ve had. The A pillar and rain gutter are covered with chrome pretty thoroughly. In fact , there’s no rain gutter any more with the chrome on there. Hadn’t thought of that until your discussion here.

    Up in smoke (starter)

Had a solenoid stick on when starting my Roadrunner years ago. Revved the engine and spun the darn thing up to jet engine speed! When I took it apart the centrifugal force had pulled all the windings out and they were dragging to the point of press-fit in the housing.

    What is your ride height?

@MoparLeo isn’t all wrong though. You can of course stick them at whatever height you want, however… there is front suspension geometry that both changes camber and steering angle as the car tilts. These are designed into the metal parts. When you raise or lower the car from FSM numbers you...

    Engine Casting # Mark Question

    Wow, I think you’ve got it. To answer your question, here’s a ‘64 413. My ‘64 361 has LS

    How much time to replace a 318 w a 440 68 coronet

Doh! Still will need more than just hooking up exhaust

    How much time to replace a 318 w a 440 68 coronet

Not mentioned above is the exhaust. Have a plan. Nothing worse than finishing everything else and having to keep the ride short because you’ve got open headers.

    Off idle stumble.

Good point here ^^, and rarely mentioned. Both the vac can and the the mechanical limiter have these numbers. They are always in distributor degrees, just like the distributor specs in the manuals. These vary a huge amount between different distributors. I’ve always used junk distributor parts...

    Off idle stumble.

This works except for adding heat and giving up 2-3 mpg.

    Off idle stumble.

This is incorrect. Set to 36 with vac advance off. (Unless you’re nuts and running it full load on a dyno). With vac advance on this would be roughly 50 some-odd degrees. When under full throttle there’s no vac and therefore no vac advance.

    Off idle stumble.

Absolutely. If someone can’t make a car respond appropriately when stuffing the pedal to the floor hard at any and all speeds -and- have it perfectly driveable there’s something wrong. They did it from the factory, not much of a stretch to expect it when altered a bit. Most of the comments are...

    Off idle stumble.

For those discounting the secondaries because it’s off idle, remember with an AVS set properly you can hit the throttle with your thumb IN NEUTRAL and have them open half way within a half second. With a Holley, no ball and a white spring it goes even faster. Off idle bog most certainly can be...

    Off idle stumble.

I have a very similar setup, no bog. Nothing special for the accel pump, stock cam, 25 squirters. With the wimpiest spring in the vac sec you’ll get mega-bog, especially if the little ball isn’t in there.

    Putting back an original radio

The one I have available only does plastics. I need to send out for metal. Not sure if aluminum is done? Many others though. With dimensions I can draw it.

    Putting back an original radio

Putting a year-correct am/fm into my ‘64 Sport Fury. The bezel is unobtanium so I drew it up in Solidworks and I’m printing it on a 3d printer. When you can’t find the rare part, these days you can often make it.

    Dyno app.

Tire size -> diameter -> rotations per mile x axle ratio x tranny ratio x speed/60. With the auto I added 10% to the axle ratio for full throttle slippage. That came out just about perfect. The app calibrates at a dead stop before you go and uses the accelerometers to know the actual speed (to...

Oh definitely. I think it figures you lose 20% to the drivetrain.

    Dyno app.

You put in weight, tire size, gear ratios, fuel tank size and a variety of other things. It calibrates the accelerometers in the phone. Super easy to use. There are some European car guys who have done A/B with a chassis dyno and got identical results. It will provide wheel hp if you want it. I...

    Dyno app.

So, I took out the Sport Fury and tried it. Came out exactly as I expected. 290 hp (net). Did a few runs and all were pretty close. Figure a ‘71 440 hp was 305 and this has 20 ci less. Beats dragging the thing to some dyno for the same result. Little hook on the left is the end of the torque...

    Dyno app.

Was looking for something else on my iPhone and came across "PerfExpert", an app for 0-60, 1/4 mile -and- dyno. So I dropped the $12 and got it. Most of the shitty apps of this sort use the gps alone and not surprisingly they aren't too accurate. This however uses the three accelerometers in the...
