How much vertical play does an engine have with mounts in?

Unbolt the mounts. Place a block of wood under the crank pulley and jack it up with a bottle jack. Keep an eye on the firewall so you aren't pushing against anything. Or just yank the dang motor out and be done with it. Half day job out and in that you have been dragging out over a month now...

How hot should an 8 3/4 housing get?

New gears getting broke in or do you have some miles on it? New gears getting broke in will run a little hot. You need to make some short drives and then let it cool off in between. After a few cycles change oil again and add fresh additive.

Checking my information: 71 440 steel crank internally balanced? "HEAVY" rods?

There are no stampings by the dist pad on a 440. They are on top front of the engine ahead of the intake on the drivers side. You probably know this but others may not.

As simple as these motors are to pull why wouldn't you just yank the damn thing?? Laying on your back having **** fall in your eyes sucks. You would have been done by now if you had done it that way. As i said before, get someone over there to help you that knows what they are doing. Cutting...

    Trans questions.

The 4x4 trans and transfer have some good value to the truck crowd. Sell it. The small block 727 is sought after also. Sell it. Build that BB727 with the $$ from the other 2. Should be able to upgrade some stuff and have more room to walk in the shop.
