There was a product I think called 'Extend' I used back in the 80's on my 1st restoration and it wasn't expensive. It turned the rusty metal black stopping the rusting process. Used some Rustoleum products on my truck couple years ago and seems to have have held up.
As posted, rust is a silent demon, hidden by the paint and usually larger area affected than viewed. Was surprised how an area of the quarter on my ride under the side trim just showed some bubbles, being a CA car that never saw salt, didn’t think it would be more than surface rusting…until...
Been going back ‘n forth on a new top for my ’63 since I got a new one on a few years ago that doesn’t fit right. I liked the vinyl one I had on the ’70 Cuda and sure like the one posted here. Been thinking on a gray top to match the car. Cloth top wrinkles; but as posted, most of them go away...
Yep, love and hate with vinyl tops. Had a few and MO, never liked them; but they were the thing back when. They were finicky to keep looking nice. As posted, yours looks sweet just the way it is; but of course, it is YOUR car and YOUR choice.
Hobby Lobby stocks unique Q-tips including tiny needle-pointed tips I’ve used for detailing work. Bright lighting and reduce my caffeine intake when doing this, lol. Doesn’t take much, a thin coat of the Vaseline and wipe off the overspray after the paint has cured. Also used them lightly...
When I've done delicate painting such as on emblems, trim and wheels, I've used Vaseline as the paint 'masking' on chrome, SS, and aluminum using spray paint.
You have some good tips here, having gone through this on my car. I’d just add, if the adjustments may require loosening the bolts at the bottom of the door, be wary, so as not to strip any. My ride is a CA car having little rust and took the entire car apart with little trouble unlike the first...
Love and hate thing. I wasn’t keen on having holes drilled in the body only to be faster rust points and chipping paint. Friend of my father’s told the dealer when ordering his new car, he didn’t want the dealer’s decal on it, unless they paid him for advertising their dealer, lol. Some of the...
I got a tip from someone years ago on painting stuff like this. Cleaned the letters with alcohol and masked using Vaseline and q-tips. Also did my old set of Magnum’s same method. Worked fine for me; just limit the caffeine before doing the masking. Now for me to do a better job removing the...
Other possible, check the weather stripping adhesion. All glued down where you can lift it with your fingers? Had that hassle. Adhesive ages and loses adhesion. In the rain a ton of water flows down the channels and if the stripping isn't adhering a point of entry for H2O..
Can’t tell you how many times old rides didn’t have nicely mated lines back when. My 73 Challenger and 70 Cuda hoods never set perfectly. My 63 deck lid has a bit of a rise on the left rear. Lid has been set and reset obtaining nice lines left/right, front – far as MO goes – it is the lid. Not...
Weather stripping looks like it's in good shape. Minor thing is the gap where they meet over the latch. Heavy rain and wind action might bring some seepage there but likely not as much as you're describing. You could try a coat of Vaseline on the strip and see of you find areas on the lid with...
Be oh so PICKY about top sizing. I went to a reputed shop that screwed up the width and length. I measured carefully what looked WRONG giving him the specs. He put on a 2nd one and effed that one up too – just less. Remeasured that one, and nope, he didn’t hear me, though he got the length...
Agree, used it as well on my '63. Be careful with the wand, I protected surfaces in proximity I didn't want the stuff to get on. Once it is on - it's ON. And have GOOD ventilation.
You have the unique experience of being tarred, just minus the feathers, something that hasn't happened to anyone that I'm aware of for maybe 200 years. Great tale for your grandkids. Good luck with the removal. The baby oil suggestion is good. A painter showed me how nicely it removes paint...
You should have window glass stops in case you haven’t looked at possible adjustment, a guess looking at your photo, the rear glass may not be coming up as far as it should. Maybe similar with the front window. One might be higher/lower than the other. Also make sure the regulators are bolted...
While looking for the hyd cylinder top yokes for my '63 Ply (WTB post is up), came across some anti-rattle clips listed for '63-70 mopars. Piqued my curiosity since I've hunted down rattling gremlins in the top before without much luck. Thought it could be the shocks or exhaust; but after some...
If that’s the case, this could be a better hassle to have as among the gremlins on the regulator could be worn gearing. If yours is like mine, the vent and window channel are bolted together and can be removed in one piece. When I restored my ride, the bottom bolts under the door...
