Tires in general should only be used for about 7 years for cars, maybe 10 on the heavier truck tires....so I would say it is time for a new set. My coronet still had the Goodyear Eagle ST's I put on in 1997...they looked great with no cracking or wear but I couldn't justify the risk of having...
I have never had an issue with white letters turning brown simply because I don't put any tire dressing on them. I spray them with simple green then hit the white letters with a SOS pad, then a stiff nylon brush over the whole tire face and rinse...tires are clean and shine without any...
I put a set of Mastercraft 235/85/16 Load range E on my crewcab about 4 years ago, they were very reasonably priced for the set, and I put a lot of miles on them with towing, hauling, camper etc. This will probably be my last year with them so 5 years (April to Sept) is not bad IMO.
I have cop car rims and 68 Chrysler dog dish caps on my 68 T/C wagon....love the look! As for expensive dog dish caps....have you checked out prices on the 1968 Dodge 9" poverty caps....I'm looking for a set for my 68 Coronet and have been stunned by what they are selling for!
I have a set of Cooper load range E on my truck and they seem to be holding up well...going on their 4th spring/summer season and still have about 40-50% tread.
I'm going to be trying these Cooper Radial GT's RWL tires when I finally get my old coronet home. ;)
I liked the old Goodyear Eagle ST tires that were available up until the late 90's early 2000's way more the BFG's, but once they stopped making them BFG's were pretty much your only option, I have a set on my wagon and hate them. When I get my coronet back I'll be putting new tires on it since...
On the 68 Chrysler 300 parts car I recently dragged home I had to toss on a set of spare steel rims, my wifes 16" winter tires off her 2011 Caliber...I think the 16's actually look pretty good on the car. I don't think I would go bigger then 16" though.
I have always been a huge fan of steelies and dog dish caps, so I put my vote in on some 15x6, 6.5 rims and a 225 or 235, I don't like the short sidewall of the 60 series so a 70/75 series side wall would be my choice.
