If you are experiencing an issue with the AMP meter ... you are probably not going to like what you find. There is a thread on this site to give you directions on how to bypass the amp meter.
You have 2 wires from your ignition switch ... one for the start and one for the run. Sounds like the run wire is not supplying power. I would start there.
I will be installing this one ... http://www.designed2drive.com/
You attach the HEI module underneath a stock electronic ignition dizzy ... I have installed similar setups on other vehicles and they work great but I always kept a spare module in the car just in case.
On a previous vehicle I wired a dash mounted switch in-line with the A/C clutch wire to control the compressor during hard acceleration or on long uphill grades ... seemed to work good. I used an illuminated one so I could tell when the compressor was actually on.
If it's a blinker / flasher you need one of these ...

Nothing worse than an off-ramp mechanic.
I've installed the HEI module conversion in several vehicles (including a 71 Datsun station wagon) and have never had a problem. The plus side is that the HEI modules are available at almost any parts store where as points might be more difficult to source.
