it's been years, but I'm sure I tried running no thermostat with the same hot result..... which got me to thinking
I daily drove the car for over a decade after that
saw it work for me....... 180 thermo wouldn't hold the temp down, would just keep getting hotter, tried another one with the same result......put a 195 in it, and it never got over 195......every situation seems to be unique, go figure
I had a ratty 68 vette that did the same thing
*** you guys would have cut the vette a little slack, it was a fast, ratty convertible with chrome header/ side pipes..... I beat the crap out of it!
I also had an issue where a higher temp thermostat held the coolant in the radiator longer and cooled better than a lower temp thermostat or no thermostat at all
prob not your situation, but I had an AMC engine that always ran hot....... finally pulled it apart and found the water jackets in the block were partially packed with a hard, rusty, carbon type material......... we dug it out with ice pics and coat hangers and sent it off to the machine shop
back in the day, I had a 390 AMC engine that started running hot, upon some investigation I found the lower parts of the water jackets clogged badly with rock hard carbon looking material
