OK, finally got to look at it since it got below 110 degrees. First the gas cap was not not fully tighten. I take the fall for that. Second the green wire to the VR was not tight. Corrected both and we are good. Thanks all.

I spoke to them and they told me they sell hundreds of 50s for street use with no complaints. Whe I get them if they have issues I can return for exchange.
So I converted the 69 440 to electronic ignition. With the point system it was at 17. What's a good number for the electronic ignition? It's a stock engine.
Had the same problem on my 72 Duster just last week. I wiggled the voltage limiter and made sure it was full in. No more erratic gages.

The ALT gage can be bypassed. Check this thread...
