What I've done for transmissions & diffs is make a V-shaped "cradle", since they're both kind of rounded at the bottom. Can be made of anything from wood to Simpson ties to whatever. Securing the clumsy & heavy item you're cradling so it can't roll off is very important, obviously.

My shops are white with the 48" LED lighting - works great. I'm in northern Idaho, so my shops are insulated & heated, which I highly recommend.
