    Dipstick Hole

My 512 build is in the car, and the truck 400 block I'm using has a factory plug in the dipstick hole. The truck motors used an oil pan mounted dip stick. So I need to remove the plug! Any idea how to do that? It seems to be pushed in there pretty tightly, with only a small lip at the top. Not...

    Stage VI Heads

Got my 512 stroker almost together, but the top valve cover bolt holes aren't lining up! And Couldn't get the welded up aluminum covers to fit either. The rocker arms were too close to the gasket flange. Tried some chrome , stock shape (MP?) covers and they fit pretty good, other than the 2 top...

    Fuel pump push rod

Is it ok to leave the pump push rod out of the motor? Does it plug any oil passages, or does it get oil pump pressure? Using an electric pump, so don't need the push rod. Just want make sure it's ok to leave it out. Anyone ever done this before?

    Piston Ring Assy Lube

What is the recommended lubricant for piston rings and skirts on a new engine assembly? I have heard WD 40, 5W engine oil, ring assy lube etc. I have used 10W40 oil in the past with good results and ring seal. What do you guys use? Thanks

    512 Stroker Ring Choice

Ready to order pistons and rings for this 400 based stroker motor. 4.25 stroke, 4.402 bore (.060 over). Will be using the ICON flat top pistons, IC823-060. There is a Total seal moly ring set, file to fit, that I like. CRG 3690-45, with 11 LB oil ring tension. Also available is CRL 3690-45 with...

    Gear Drive vs Timing Chain

My 496 has a timing gear drive on it, building that into a 512 now, and considering going to a dbl roller timing chain. The gear drive is pretty noisy. It has a high lift roller cam in it. Any advantage to the gear drive? Looks like setting cam timing is pretty tricky with the gear drive...

    400 Block at .060 OS ??

I picked up a 400 motor, 230 block. Got it apart, and the bore is measuring 4 13/32". That's 4.403! Looks like it is is .060 over size. ARRRGGG! This has the big main supports, and I was planning to use it on my 512 build. Cleaned the piston top off, and it has 60 stamped on it! Does that mean...

    Milodon Cam Gear Drive

Took this 496 apart, and it has a Milodon 13000 gear drive turning a Comp Cams solid roller. So when I put this on the 512 I'm building, I will need to degree in the cam. Instructions are pretty straight forward, but how do you degree it in with the heads on, and valve train on, since it doesn't...

    Sonic testing

Building a 512, and not sure how thick the cyl walls are on the 400 block. Don't have a sonic tester, and the Block Shop doesn't either. So what to do? Never tested 1 before, and never had a problem. What is the minimum thickness you want on the major thrust area of the cyl wall? How much for a...

    Main cap walk?

Looking at the main bearing cap mounts on this 496 Block. Never seen cap walk before, but is there any sign of that here?

    Glazed cyl walls?

Just got thus 496 apart, and the walls look pretty shiny to me. Motor was losing a lot of compression past the rings. Can you tell from pics if this was the Prob?

    Stealth Head valve seat

Had a Stealth Head on a 496. When I took it off, and was cleaning the valves, I noticed one ex valve was letting light thru from the chamber side. Re faced the valve, touched up the seat, and still not sealing all the way around the valve. I can see light in the ex port when shining a flaslite...

    Starting a 512 build

Just starting our 512 build. (With my son) Began with removing the poor sealing 496 from our 68 Valiant drag racer. Going to use the best parts from that, along with a 400 block and new pistons. Here's a pic opening up the bottom end of the 496, and of the 400 block we're using. Chose the 230...

    Stealth Head Port Work

Does it help low lift flow to remove the ridge from the valve seat insert, where it meets the aluminum casting? There is a small ridge there, looks like it would disrupt airflow. 440 heads.

    Head Gaskets

When I pulled my 496 apart, it had copper head gaskets on there. And no O Rings. It did look like there is some red RTV like substance on there. Every copper gasket I looked at requires O rings. So not sure whats going on there. Also wondering why copper works with Aluminum heads, while steel...

    400-230 block main web strength

Found out after I bought this 230 block, that the ones produced after 10 10 71 DID NOT have the massive main bearing supports. Only the ones produced before that date. Well I lucked out, this one has a casting date of 9 3 71! So I'll pull the crank and check it, to be sure. And also in a thread...

    400 motor Crank ID

Just bought a 400 engine with trans today. The guy claimed it had a 440 crank in it. Here are a few pics, wondering if anyone can tell by the balancer if this is a 440 crank. I'm thinking it looks like a 440 six pack balancer. Or is this just a Garden variety 400 cast crank? Thanks for your...

    400 block-230 casting

Does anyone know what 230 blocks are going for these days? Is it worth it to seek one out to build a stroker motor? 440 source says it's the strongest 400 block made, due to the extra material around the main web. I have a couple of 630 blocks, so I was unsure whether to use one of those or a...

    383 PISTON HEIGHT

Did the 68 383 have a positive deck height? I've heard of that, never saw one. Now a guy is wanting a piston for one, and he says it's slightly positive. Is that also true for the 69 383? Wish they had one for the 440.

    440 stock deck height

Found a 1969 440 Magnum, came out of a Charger. Just want to see what the stock deck height is with that motor, from the factory. Are the pistons about .017 below deck? Or is it more like .050" ? I can use some parts off it to beef up my low compression RV motor, and possibly use the Hi Perf...
