Yet another 8-3/4 setup question. 3.73

First time I've tried setting up my own gear. Last time I paid a guy to set my 3.91 up...sounded like a freight train coming, drove it from my kids house to mine and sheared 6-7 teeth off the ring gear. When I pulled it, the pinion had about 1/4" of end play. So here I am, schlepping and...

    741 yoke, 10 spline vs. 29 spline

Ordered (online) a new 3.73 ring and pinion for my 741 case. Opened it up and found a 29 spline pinion, opposite of the existing10 spline yoke I was planning on using. New pinion has 7/8" thread and larger lock nut than the 10 spline. The question is, can I get a 29 spline yoke that uses the...

75 lbs. oil pressure to ZERO in 10 seconds. WTF?

Just fired my 383 last week. Started and broke in very well. New Melling hi volume pump made pressure 75lbs. at startup, drops to 25 lbs.at idle, 60lbs. at 2500 rpm. Took my son up to the parts store to get collector gaskets. Almost drove by the store driveway, so I leaned on the brakes a bit...

Any bolts in 383 iron heads go into the water jacket?

Finally put antifreeze in my fresh 383, and it looks like I'm getting some dripping...from a header bolt. WTF?

End of the world 5.2L build issue

So I decided to build a basic small block without any electronics, you know, JUST IN CASE. Started with a newly rebuilt 5.2L motor out of a '94 Dakota that got t-boned (by a cop, no less, but another story). Anyway, it's been sitting in the garage for 15 yrs. or so with less than 10k miles on...

I was rolling along good with my sm. blk. to big block swap, and then...

Tried installing the 727 shift linkage today and got kicked square in the nuts. It just doesn't seem to wanna fit. Are the linkages different between a 904 and 727, specifically the gear shift linkage that goes from the frame rail to the trans? The one I took off the 904 seems too long and hits...

    273/904 value?

Pulled the original 273/904 out of my 67 Belvedere and replaced it with a 383/727. I would like to sell the small block and trans so I can buy more stuff for the car. Have absolutely no idea what a fair price may be, so I thought I'd ask. Motor was rebuilt by a shop in CA, (re-ring and hone, new...

Small block/big block PS pump mount

Not knowing that the 2 PS pump mounts were different, I was just going to use the 273 mount on the 383. Nope. Question is, is there a simple mod to make it fit? The mount hardware for the 273 is 1-1/2" wide, the 383 is 2-1/2". Hope you can see it in the pics...

Anyone ever have their 383 dyno'ed? Just trying to get a idea...

Just looking for a reasonable HP/TQ range for a non-stroked 383. Any other additional power adders are fair game, just 'splain what you got.

Probably not the last dumb question I'm going to ask...

Just to preface- When I bought this 383 15 years ago, it was disassembled. I got all the parts wrapped in plastic, and small stuff in a box. Now that I'm just about done assembling it, I find this in one of the boxes. I believe it's a spacer? that goes on the back of the crank? Question is...do...

    Flex plate question

Quick question- is a stock BB flex plate tough enough to handle say, 500hp/500 tq? In other words, is there a known limit that should not be exceeded? I'm sure I'll never be near it, but just checking to see if anyone has had any issues before I go and spend money unnecessarily. Been there too...

Valve covers won't clear rocker arms

Like they say in the movie "Caddyshack", "Turds! Double Turds! Farts!" The valve covers I was planning on using won't clear the rocker arms/shafts on my 383. I'm sure I'm not the first one to have this problem...what valve covers might fit over rockers that look like this? Pics of my VC's below...

    Cam button use

I just read a thread about a cam walking out and causing major damage to a fresh engine. Feel bad for the poster. My question is, how many members think a cam button is necessary, and actually use one? I have a new motor I'm just buttoning up, and this made me think...

Another 383 build with a couple questions. Let me know what you think.

Apologies for the long post, but... I have been reading intently any threads containing info about stock stroke 383 builds, especially ones like this (383 build?) that contain info pretty close to where I'm currently at. '66 383 block cleaned, sonic tested, bored .030, mains align honed, deck...

    Camshaft install- need help please

I tried a temp install of my cam in the 383 today so I could get a measurement for new pushrods. After I got the cam in (and pushed all the way to the rear) I looked into the lifter bores and noticed that I could see portions of 2 cam lobes in each hole. So I pulled the cam forward so the...

Correct oil pan for SB to BB swap in 67 Belvedere ll

I'm sure this has been done 100 times by members on this site. 273/383 swap in a 67 Belvedere ll using Schumacher type mounts and original k-member. BB 727 replaces the original 904. Questions are- 1. Which would be the correct oil pan to clear steering linkage, etc? 2. What was your fix at the...

Piston to valve clearance ( Chevy article, but still applies to Mopar)

    Cam, TC question (s)

Now that I'm getting my motor assembled, I have to ask this question (or two). When installing the cam, what influences the decision to install it with "X" advance? I read that guys install them with 2 or 4 degrees advance and wondered how they come up with a specific number. In my case, my cam...

    Degreeing a cam

I admit I have never degreed in a cam. 40 yrs. ago when I was fooling around with motors it was never an option, just line up the dots and lock it down. My new cam card says "4 degrees of advance have been ground into this camshaft". 1. Will it be necessary to add advance when installing? 2...

    Torque convertor question

Created a tech card with Hughes Engine while looking for a TC for my 383/727 build. They suggested their 3000 stall convertor, $450. I have the opportunity to buy a name brand aftermarket TC, unused in the box, 2800 stall, for $185. Is the 200 RPM difference significant enough to justify...
