1972 Plymouth Roadrunner 440+6 (tribute)

1972 Plymouth Road Runner 440+6 tribute

About this Mopar:

Year
1972
Make
Plymouth
Model
Satellite (Road Runner Tribute)
1972 Plymouth Satellite now a Plymouth Road Runner 440+6 barrel tribute.

This Satellite was originally a 318 2 barrel Sherwood Forest Green base car (VIN info below) and now it's a 440+6 barrel Roadrunner (tribute or clone) and it was repainted in 2010(ish) and the seats recovered plus a new rug. The car had only 12,051 miles on it when I got it in May 2015, and it had the rebuilt 440 w/a 4 barrel and the modified 727 with the Dana 60 rear.

***In 1972 the Six Barrel option was available until it was killed by the EPA due to emissions restrictions so only 3 vehicles slipped out of Chrysler in 1972 before it was shut down by the government, 2 Dodge Charger Rallye's and 1 Roadrunner were made with only the Roadrunner surviving to this day and both Chargers were lost to time (destroyed). Chrysler has denied their existence to this day.

****Latest News****

Update 6/30/17:
I changed out the Weld racing wheels for 63 Series O.E. Chrysler wheels from Wheel Vintiques (2x15x6,2x15x8 w/ 3.5" backspace)

The wheels: (63 Series O.E. Chrysler | Black)

The tires: Cooper Cobra Radial GT - front 215/75 R15, rear 275/60 R15.

Update 8/25/17: BAD NEWS - The battery exploded due to a grossly overcharging alternator so it was replaced with a good old reliable 60 amp one wire alternator (in black) from Tuff Stuff Performance PN#8509RGSP and since a new battery was in order I got a Duralast 24-DLG battery and now there are no charging issues at all (beforehand there were many ghosts in the machine)

The alternator: (https://www.tuffstuffperformance.com/i-24486910-alternator-60-amp-1-wire-single-groove-pulley-black-8509rgsp.html?ref=search:https://www.tuffstuffperformance.com/search.html?q=8509rgsp&go=Go)

The battery: (https://www.autozone.com/batteries-...ttery-24-dlg-group-size-24-700-cca/832328_0_0)

Update 5/11/19: I removed the 750cfm Holley 4 barrel and Edelbrock Torker intake and installed the Edelbrock 6 barrel intake plus the 1350cfm Holley 6 barrel carbs (approx 6 hours for the install and I took my time to insure I did it correctly) I also had the old white & wrinkled strobe stripe changed to a gold reflective stripe and I had the 440 hood & trunk decals replaced with the factory correct 440+6 decals. ( decals purchased thru eBay )

I got the complete 6 barrel kit from: Herb's Parts

The 6 barrel: (Herb's Parts: SIX PACK SET UP "RB" ENGINE 413, 426 WEDGE & 440, 6-Packs, 6PAKRBENG)
I Always Trust Herb's !!! :usflag:

Update 6/2/19:
Replaced the stock 318 leaf springs (5 driver & 5 pass) with custom Super Stock leaf springs ( 6 driver, 7 pass ) and with 2 1/2" lift built into them and now the car handles like it should. It's much stiffer in turns and does not bounce on bumps at all. Also had the exhaust tips changed to straight exits instead of the California turn downs it came with.

The exhaust: work done by my local Meineke Auto Repair near Gardner | Meineke #1151 | Oil Change Brakes Mufflers ) run by the nicest staff you will ever meet !!

The springs: (1966 - 1973 Charger, Super Bee, Roadrunner, Satellite rear leaf spring with 2-1/2" lift, 6 leaf) Normally they come as 6l & 6r but my springs are 6l & 7r and custom made (just ask for the 7th rh spring when you order )

Rear spring, strobe stripe ,decal & brake conversion done by: Randy's Auto Sales: This is a local Massachusetts Mopar GOD and can service or restore any classic muscle car (Mopar is his speciality) and always has something going on, his personal cars are legendary and he's the nicest guy you'll ever meet......he always has some killer muscle cars for sale !! search the site and check his inventory out or the best bet is to go talk to him directly for there is always something for sale.....always.

Randy's web site: (https://www.randysautos.net/directions)

Update 7/26/19: Added the vintage, rare & legendary Direct Connection "Tall" valve covers (PN#3769415 (right) and #3769420 (left) to give the motor a more correct factory/stock look (painted with Herb's Hemi orange engine paint) and I also updated the manual's pictures.

The paint: (Herb's Parts: HEMI ORANGE ENGINE PAINT, Engine Paint, 2024)

Update 9/26/21: I changed out the factory 22" 318 2 barrel 2 core radiator to a brand new copper/brass Cool Craft 22" 4 core big block radiator w/built in trans cooler plus I replaced the previously installed 160° thermostat with a original NOS 1973 Chrysler 195° thermostat (Dodge/Plymouth PN# 3418459) Plus I got rid of the junk flex hoses and changed them out to the correct molded factory hoses (Dodge/Plymouth PN# 3462114 upper & 3462119 lower) and a proper 7 bladed fan (Dodge/Plymouth PN# 2863226) w/ a factory correct fan shroud (Dodge/Plymouth PN# 2998328) from our trusty guys at Herb's Parts finished the job ...now the car runs much cooler under stress and while cruising like it should....huge difference.

The radiator: (Plymouth Road Runner, 1970-72 V8 BB 22 Inch Wide Radiator - Cool Craft)

The shroud: (Herb's Parts: 22" 1970-1973 B & E BODY FAN SHROUD, Shrouds, 328)

Update 5/30/23: I had the factory manual front drum brakes changed out to manual disc brakes and changed out the master cylinder to the correct one for manual disc brakes, braking has improved !!

**My goal in building this car is to make it as close to a factory 1972 Plymouth Road Runner 440+6 barrel as possible but with headers and big tires....basically a "Day 2" car for street/strip action)**

** 'Day 2'
indicates a car that uses parts specific to the car purchased and put on immediately after purchase. The term 'Day 2' is used because so many guys installed headers, cams, fat tires and traction bars the '2nd day' they owned it. **
And yes the car fk'ing screams !!!
I mean WOW !!!! Holy Shi...
:wetting:

Comments

I love the stance from the 2.5" lift, considering it for my ride but not sure how to accomplish it with a 4-link coil over rear.
