I am the 3rd owner of this car and have had it over 30 years. Originally purchased in the St. Louis, MO area and then drove it to FL when I moved. Was a daily driver for a couple of years until we bought a house. I restored the car in the early 90's and have been enjoying driving it ever since.
Car had a bumper hitch on it when I bought. Story from the 2nd owner was that the original owner used it to tow a travel trailer. 2nd owner had it for about 4 yrs and drove it to work and back a few miles away. He did auto repair, mostly transmissions, on the side so the car was in excellent mechanical condition for a 20-yr old, 90k mile car. Even the A/C blew nice and cold. He told me the most work he did on the car was valve cover gaskets and a new master cylinder. He was selling because the body work (bondo) and paint (Earl Scheib - I'll paint any car for $99) done by the original owner was showing age and he didn't do body work.
When I started the resto, I found several copies of the build sheet in the usual locations - under the rear carpet, tucked under the springs of the rear seat bottom, but there was a 3rd folded neatly, not creased, in the rear seat back frame that is in perfect condition. It confirmed all the options came from the factory and that the original owner ordered it that way.
The car had a GTX flip-top gas cap on it when I bought it and I am sure the 2nd owner didn't install it. While disassembling for resto I found the original body-colored cap under the rear seat as if it been in the trunk and had fallen behind the seat. The cap was in near-perfect condition so I suspect the original owner had the GTX cap put on when he bought the car or shortly thereafter. I came across a dealer brochure for the Trailer/Tow package, which this car has, that said the Trailer/Tow package was not available on the GTX. I have always wondered if the original owner really wanted a GTX, but couldn't get the Trailer/Tow package so he ordered a well-optioned Satellite and had the GTX cap put on it. I wish I could talk with him about it (I have the CertiCard with his name and address), but he was an older gentleman even back then and passed away many years ago.
I kept the car mostly stock when I restored it. The only changes are the Magnum 500's, '68 Hi-Po exhaust manifolds and an H-pipe. Almost all of the trim is original.
