Sterling 10.5 axle
The Sterling 10.5 axle is an automotive axle manufactured by Ford Motor Company at the Sterling Axle Plant in Sterling Heights, MI. It was first used in model year 1985 Ford trucks. The axle was developed to replace the Dana 60 and Dana 70. The Sterling 10.5 axle is currently only made as a full floating axle.

This being the case, would this be a good axle to place under the Express? it has a 3.55 gear ratio and big drum brakes. The F 150 7700 for 2003 is a semi float 10.25. This is the one I have.

I like the ratio. My American Axle rear is a 3.73[RAM dually], and nobody made a taller gear. I'd like less gear, for towing the trailer. I wonder if it's made with discs?

it is, 2005 and up F 250- 350. I'm contemplating tearing mine out from under the 7700 and putting the one from my other F 150 under there so I can use the Sterling for the Express. Supposed to be bulletproof.

  • Ring gear measures 10.5".
  • 35 Spline axle shafts with a 1.5" diameter
  • Ratios 3.08 to 4.30. Current production ratios offered are 3.31, 3.55, 3.73, and 4.30.
  • Since ca. 2005, the gears are formed by the face hob process, formerly face milled process.
  • 2005 through 2012 have 13.38" disk brakes, duel piston calipers and 8.1" in hat parking brakes.
  • 2013 have 14.29 disk brakes, duel piston calipers and 9" in hat parking brakes.

Holy crap, THAT would be a heavy assembly.

I'm going to need it to stop as well as it goes..There's one on a 2014 F 250 6.4 L here that they want $1200 for the whole shebang.

If you are wondering about the strength of a Sterling, I have had one for 20 years. Mine is the 10.25 in 3.73. I have a 1997 f250 powerstroke with 240000 miles of hard pulling of campers , horse trailers , boats, cars and others I don't remember. It still is tight and will probably go to a million miles. Same for the engine. Also my motor makes about 650 pounds of torque.

Yep, I know it's a good one. The one in my '03 7700 has been great! I am about 90% sure i'm going to swap it out and narrow it for the Express. I have a '02 F150 4x4 as well with a very good axle under it to swap into the '03. It's a parts truck.

I thought of an issue guys.....the Sterling I have has the 7 lug bolt pattern. Bummer. I either have to use a different year or find a set of custom axles with a different bolt pattern. I have an inquiry into Moser right now about that. I'll let you's know what the say.
