friend has a 64 dodge with the tapered rear axles with the large nut on the end and open 8-3/4 differential -- he has a nice 489 case differential with a new clutch style sure grip he wants to install -- is it simply a remove and replaced procedure or are there any modifications he has to make to use his original tapered axles and to set the endplay correctly. thanks
 
To set end play you have to shim the axle flange to get the spec.
You may be lucky and not need additional shims. Possible that you may have to remove some.
You may be good to go as is.
It's not a big deal as you check the clearance then measure the shim(s) to get the proper spec.
Last is to bolt the flange to torque spec and read the clearance. Preferred end play is .013-.023.
A service manual has step by step instructions.

I was thought the axles were different lengths for open vs suregrips for the tapered axle
 
It may be. Didn't see it in the service manual. I'll look again.
 
Here is what is stated in the 64 Service manual.
Push both axle shafts and bearing cups in towards the center of the housing as far as they will go.
After pushing the left axle in as far as it will go,measure the amount the right axle shaft bearing cup protrudes out of the axle housing using feeler gauge stock.
If the protrusion of the right bearing cup is less than .052 inch(Standard Differential) or .081 inch (Sure-Grip Differential) no shims are needed on the right side.
If the protrusion is beyond the above specs that is the amount of shims to add to the right side.
Now, that may mean the difference between the standard,no thrust buttons and the Sure-Grip that has the thrust buttons. .029 of a inch.

'64 was the first year that the axle shafts were the same length for both open and SG. (shorter length that the SG used to be)

Old thrust block was 1 1/4" wide and the new thrust block and SG is 1 1/2" wide.
