I bought an old 1968 new yorker that runs pretty well- my intention was to pull the 440 out of it and stick it in my converitble satellite.

I did a tune up on it to see what was wrong with it since it runs in the new yoker and I started looking at the casting numbers. The block was cast in 4/67 and the heads are 906's.

Did they ever make that? I assume that the heads are probably off the original motor and the short block has been replaced.

Did Chrysler ever put 906 heads on a 67 440 engine?

906 heads were a 1968 - 1971 number. It's possible that yours are original. Also a slim possibility that the 4/67 casting wasn't used for a few months and ended up in an early production run for your car in Aug. 1968.

what does the pad say for numbers and letters in front of the intake? It's probably an all original early 68 engine.....remember, they started putting everything together in mid August of 67 for the 68 model year....engines were put together long before that and set aside

It wasn't so much as the engines were assembled and put aside as it was the castings were made and put on the shelves for assembly at a later date......

Does the ID pad say C440 or D440? If it says D then its a '68 engine.

My '68 440 was cast in 3/67

Where the 915's only used on HP engines in 67? Yes according to Chrysler. This would mean there was another head casting in 67 also according to mymopar.com 906 heads were used from 66 to 72 which would be correct for your engine but according to Chrysler Counter Parts the casting # for 66-67 non-HP blocks was head #2405158. So whom are we to believe?

To complicate matters more I have an original 67 383HP block with 915 heads.

906's were 68 - 71 or 72, then came 346's etc. The "lo perf" '66 & 67 used closed chamber 516's. Mismatches of parts was known to happen. Later motors (73 & later) more prone to that. I had a couple or 400's & 440 with different casting #'s & they sure looked virgin to me.

915 heads were used on all 67' 440 engines. The difference was the HP engines had the big exhaust valve. However, a friend of mine rebuilt his original 67' R/T, and the engine had the 915 and small valve. Apparently, Chrysler ran out of the large valve heads, and just Installed stock 440 closed chamber heads. Nobody knew any better, and they all ran great. They were some sneaky guys at Chrysler !

I looked- its "d" on the front pad of then motor. Must have been a 4/76 casting and assembled with the new 906 heads.
thanks for the help guys

Yep that is a '68 engine so its got 68 pistons and 906 heads
