Finally dropped the engine in after finding the proper oil pan (971) and the proper pickup tube, (that was fun). Got the car as a project that was unfinished, so I did not tear it down. Car is coded as a 400 auto but after dropping a 440 in place, things were not lining up correctly. Got the right engine mounts and replaced the spools. Didn't tack them in like what some did on other post. So the drivers side fits in correctly, but the passenger side seems off. After some digging, I'm pretty sure that someone had previously changed the K-member to a small block. Mounts on the k-frame are offset so when the engine sits in both mounts the engine is not lining up, twisted towards the passenger side. But because I didn't tack the spools in, I'm able to push on the tail of the transmission and straighten the motor. Transmission lines up on the mount. Can I line up the engine and then weld the spools in place?

Also, my new transmission mount can slide side to side. Is this right? Not familiar with these mounts.

I seem to remember that the parts house motor mounts were not right for my 440, ended up reusing my old ones and pressed in new urethane inserts. In any case you could be right about the K frame, but the drivers side mount in your picture looks way to close to the oil pump.

Yup, looks like I have a small block k-frame. Also my transmission mount was defective after all, got the right one and now the engine lines up. Engine sit in straight but seems about 1/2" forward I guess because it's a small block k-frame. Do I continue with the mock up or look for a bb k-frame?

I used a small block k frame with my big block I don't remember it having issues being offset using big block mounts. 73 charger

The only thing I did was notch the k frame to fit the oil pan

The offset was caused by the defective transmission mount. I was able to swing the transmission tail shaft left to right by a inch on both sides with the mount bolted in. I did change the oil pan to the 971 for clearance.
