I'm parting out a 5.9 Dakota RT and had planned on keeping the posi rear but a 6 lug? Is it worth keeping knowing I'll have to source 5 lug axles? My Mopar rear axle experience is pretty much limited to 8 3/4 so any suggestions are welcome.

I'm sure you could fabricate an awesome 4WD trail beast for the kids with that ! !

You made me pull this one out? Sigh...

the rear you have is a 8-1/4,albeit with 6 lug axles.
the trick,is to swap that chunk into a b body/m body/f body or later 8-1/4 Housing,
and using the b body/m body/f body axles and brakes.
it is indeed worth selling or keeping.

side note, while it is unique to find a l/s in a dakota,
they were super common in the durangos.
most all are 3:55 gears, check the glovebox to make sure the l/s code is there.

My 2001 Dakota R/T came with a 9 1/4" 3.92 sure-grip. Pretty sure all Dakota R/T models came with that setup.
I loved that truck. Wish I had never sold it.

Nope

9 1/4

...and they are actually a 1/4" wider than a full size truck axle.

...and most all of the R/T gear ratios are 3.92 unless special ordered.

Dak R/T came standard with sure grip.

I did that with my 440 Dart love that 3:55. You just have to remember the ring gear has different bolt positions than a stock 8.25. Just FYI

I'm not sure if the spline count changed from the mid 70's version of the 9 1/4, but if it didn't a B or C body axle shaft might work.

Many Daks came with SG chunks. The 4 bangers probably not.
My 92 V6 came with a 3.55 SG and so did my V8 and they are base models.

Thanks, this is what I needed to know. I'll salvage it and tuck it away, I just hate keeping stuff I'll never use.

Believe it or not I have never found a standard Dakota in a u-pull with a SG.

Never.

I have seen literally hundreds.

Durangos with 3.55 SG, yes, but never a Dak unless it was an R/T.

Well this is an RT with a 5.9, a lot of motor for a little truck.

Of course I've also never found one with a dent free painted rear bumper either.

...and I've been looking for over a decade!

When my Dak goes to scrap you can get the SG from it.
Dakotas may be small but mine weighs 4000 lb.

My R/T CC is 4200#.

I actually think it feels light.

Reminds me of driving a A body.

Funny, it's the same size (literally at 17 feet long) as my B bodies, weighs what a C body weighs, but feels, accelerates, and handles like an A body.

In today's world light has a different meaning. My Cruze with a 1.8 weighs 4,000 lbs so by comparison a 5.9 in a vehicle weighing the same as one with a 1.8 is light plus these newer motors are no slouch.

I would at least take the center section out of it. It should be a 9 1/4” rear, cover looks like a stop sign. Let me know if you want to sell the center out of it. Shipping might not make it feasible. Looking to make my Lil Red Express spin both tires.

Do you have the fender flares?
