I know this has been brought up before but in a different question form but who is running a 295/50-15 inside the wheel well on preferably a 71-72 Plymouth ? Charger wheel wells should be the same. I'm curious what width wheel and the offset are you running, springs moved in and any rubbing issue. I have L-60's 275/60-15 on there now. Want the lower and wider tire.

Shorter tire? - no problem.

Wider tire in a stock wheel well - problem. I think you are about maxed out with the tire you can fit in that stock wheel housing. I've been looking at this myself (I'm no expert). From what I understand, to get a wider tire on that car you will have to modify something. The first thing I would suggest is to grab a tape measure and crawl under the back of your car. Here's some stuff you "can" do
a. roll the lip of the outer fender well "up" instead of "in" (gives about 1/2" more clearance outward)
b. use special offset wheels - increased backspacing usually & varies by car (gives about 1/2" more tire width inwards)
c. relocate the leaf springs into/onto the frame rails (common mod for b-bodies - gives about 3" more tire width inwards). I "think" mini-tubs are used with this modification.
d. narrowed rear end, big wheel tubs - you can probably gain 1 foot wheel/tire clearance on each side

What I'm less clear about is what can be done with 17" or 18" diameter aftermarket wheels. I'm at least considering this. More wheel, less tire = bumpier ride & better handling + you can get a lot more high performance tire options this way

I've done the tape measuring and can definitely fit a wider tire in the wheel well. Back when I bought the car it had an N50 inside the wheel well on craigers. I just don't know what the back spacing was and that's what I'm looking for. My car also had the springs moved in on front only but that didn't really seem like it was necessary.

I looked into narrowing kits and really didn't see any. One company makes them but they have been out of stock for a long time.

For the 295/50-15 most manufacturers recommend no less than a 8 wide wheel. So it'll be 8-9 wide.

Did you measure the wheel well opening? What measurements did you come up with?

I have 275/50/15s on the GTX on 8 3/4" wheels and have had G50/15s on it on 10" wheels. The 10s with a tall tire would be a no go in stock wells.

What is a G50 ? There are L60's which is a 275/60, and N50 which is a 295/50 , H50 just shorter at 26", and G60 which is 235/60. The g60 has a 9.5 sidewall the L60 a 10.5 and H50 and N50 is 12.6 sidewall and that will fit in a 71 Roadrunner wheel well.

Equall to a 265/50/25. If its not to cold tommarow I will verify that size.

You don't have to do that, I had just never heard of a G50. I've seen the 265/50 tho.

These are big boss tires 10" tread 11" side walls and in present bald state 25" tall. Slightly shorter than an L60 14 but just as wide?

I personally run a 275/60 R15 on a 8" rim with 4.5" backspacing. This combo works great and there is no rubbing, even with the suspension bottoming out or around turns. I have had the above combo on both my 70 and 73 Road Runners with great success.

OK, fine, but this is NOT what you are asking. You want a 295 tire.

There are a number of guys here who do run 295 tires on their cars. If I am not mistaken, most of them use a 5" backspacing, but we will need some of them to chime in to verify. I have heard several guys report occasional rubbing with a 295 tire, since a 295 tire seems to be the absolute max you can run. So to get it to fit you need (a) the perfect backspacing rim for your car and (b) likely the willingness to accept an occasional rub. Try running a search on old threads and you are likely to turn up some good information.

Good luck,

Hawk

I have 2 sets of 295/50/15's on two different sets of 15" X 8" wheels. One set a widened factory Rallye's & one set of Cragars. Both have a 4-1/2" back space. No rubbing issues anywhere, even with 4 or 5 people in the cars when I haul the kids & their friends around.

Believe it or not but our older Chargers have a bigger wheel opening than a 72.
