As an FYI.
I just put a set of 295/55R15 Mickey Thompson ET street radius on my 71. It fits in the wheel well and clears the leaf springs by 3/4" using a wheel with 4 3/4 back spacing

Yes, 8" rims.
Here's a pic of it on the ground.
It has the super stock springs so it sits high

Okay thanks...I was just curious to see how those meats fit on the fender lip side but it looks like you don't have to worry about that..

How much clearance do you have between the springs and tire when it's on the ground? Are you planning on dropping air pressure to tune for extra grip?

This is my 72 with the same brand Mickey Thompson tire but mine are 295/65 r15 mounted on a 10" rim
