Does anyone know if the intakes are interchangable between years on the 318 poly, like can you put a late 50s intake on a 64?

The gouge I found while researching to build my '66 poly:
P/N. CU. BBL YR
1619826 277 4 1956
1731609 303 4 1956
1732479 318 2x4 1957
1851762 318 4 1958 to 1960(?)
1859298 318 4 1960 to 1962
1859229 318 4 1962

I know the 318s are interchangeable, and think the 277 & 303 will also interchange. I put a 1859229 on my '66. The tricky part lies in kickdown linkage if you are running an auto. I ended up making my own (longer) rod at the carb. Shifts up fine, in/ out of passing gear fine, but does not down shift unless I am under 5mph. Making a left without stopping, it stays in drive.

Hope some of this is helpful.

Hi
Don't forget the temp sending unit changed in '64 so you'll have to install a bushing , 1/4" pipe to 1/8" pipe in order to use the '64 sender in a pre-'64 manifold.

Longram330 is correct. I had to do this for mine. I also cut the bottom off insert so the sending unit would protrude down into the water path more.

One thing don't run without kick down linkage. It controls the pressure in the trans. A mechanic I talked to called it throttle pressure control linkage. without it or miss adjusted you'll burn up trans. I know, cost me clutches and plates, but I changed them my self. Service Manual a must if you never did this.

Those would look great! I haven't had any experience with Strombergs and once with a Holley. They aren't complex.

Not to hijack, but what can be done in the way of a hope up for these poly motors? Such as cam, heads etc...thanks.

There's a whole lot of stuff available now for the poly's - boat anchors no more. I'm researching rebld on my'63 Fury and includes lot's of great advice from a few fellow members. One member was Mark (can't recall his full handle) and he referenced a poly guru named Gary (Pavlovich maybe I have his last name miss spelled) who has been featured in car magazines on poly reblds. I think he did Mark's motor. I have to find my notes to tell you more but if they see your post here they could tell you what they've done. Headers are hard to come by for the motor and have been suggested by a few people to add some 25 horses, only ones I know of besides custom making is from TTI, pricy and some slight changes have to be done to install such as a mini-starter and possibly rerouting trans lines. Anyway, I'm in student mode other than some obvious upgrades I've done like adding 4bbl, duals, lower gearing; these guys know much more if they reply. PM me and I can paste some of the info I got from Mark on his rebld if you have interest. Ron H.
