Hey guys, I have a chance to get the original #'s matching 400 that was in my 73 Satellite Sebring. I bought it with a 318 in it and I'm already tired of the lack of power. Is $550 worth it for the 400? He said it needs to be gone through. Any advice would be awesome.

If it turns over and not been sitting out in the rain they buy it. Only one numbers matching engine for your car.

How complete is it? Where is the trans that goes with it?

If that doesn't work out for you... I've got a complete non-numbers matching 400 I'd consider letting go for $800. I'd loose sleep at that. They aren't under every tarp nowadays (at least around here).

He said it's covered in his garage. Didn't get info on the trans or much more on the motor. I happened to drive it to work today and the guy was driving by and stopped in. He didn't own the truck but was given the motor for pulling it. I'll get more info when i see him again

A completely unknown, crapshoot 400 block goes for $500+ here for a QUICK sale. Many go for $800-$1,200. That means no windows in the block. Bores may be off, core shift, cracks, ect. That's the crapshoot. Drop $500-$1,200 and hope you got a good one when it goes to the machine shop.

If you ever decided to sell your car and had that engine sitting in your garage to sell with the car it would probably increase price of car considerably more than $550. Just my opinion.

            I just bought a '74 400 for my '74 RR for $550.

            That's not a bad price.

Too bad you are so far away, I have 2-383s, a 400, and a couple 440s to get rid of and plenty of BB 727 cores.

$500 seems to be the fair market value for good usable big-block cores these days...many times for just the short block. And it's the one that came out of your car? I wouldn't hesitate my friend...get it, figure out a nice build plan for it, and put up with the 318 until the 400 is ready to run.

$250 back in Missouri when I moved 3 years ago. 440 complete good cores here in Tx go for $500. Crackheads want $1000. JMO

The Corona Flu recession might make stuff cheaper yet.

              Good running engines different duck.

Thanks guys, I think I'm going to pick it up. Whether I build the motor or sell the car the motor would definitely help resale. Now I just need to get rid of that Whiplash cam kit i got...

It's your car's original motor, so it's basically priceless, especially if that sort of thing means something to you. Good luck with it...
