which is the better gear ratio for city and highway driving 323 or 355?
City 3:55 Highway 3:23 But your not talking a big difference. If you have a lot of torque, then 3:23
What RPM do you want to be turning at 70 MPH?
...and how tall are your rear tires? .... and what is the typical highway speed limit in your neck of the woods? .... and how far/how often do want to comfortably drive at highway speeds? These factors make a big difference in choosing.
Depends on your rear tire size also.
rear tires 275-70-15 also highway drive 25% of the time
rear tires 275-70-15
What motor/trans? I just picked up a 70 Satellite with a 440 and Richmond 5 speed, it has 3.55's in it and runs 2100 rpm at 50 mph. It feels like it needs another gear, so in this car I would run 3.23 as the 440 has plenty of torque to be fun in 1st and 2nd around town. I have 3.23 behind my 408 stroker (making around 500hp) and A833, it seems pretty good but I confess I have not had it past around 60 yet.
also with over drive as a 4 speed with 383
Always loved 3.55s better from a standing start. If you plan to cruise mostly and long trips then 3.23. If you want to have the best of both get a good tight convertor that flashes high and run the 3.23. If 4 speed then 3.55 is probably better then 3.23 overall depends a lot on the 1st gear ratio.
Those are 30 inch tall tires. Between your 2 choices given, you will want 3.55's imo.
Before I installed the 6 speed I was running around 3,500 rpm on the freeway with 3:55's, not a relaxing drive at all. 3:55's are awesome for 55-60 mph and under. Pretty sure my tires were closer to 27" though.
what is a proper first gear ratio
For a 4 speed the close ratio 1st gear is really tall to get the car going out of the hole. The wider ratio transmission with the lower granny is easier to get the car moving especially w highway gears. Most 833s have a 2.44 or 2.47 first and some have a 2.67ish first gear, I think a few had a 3.09.. 2.44 with 3.23 it's pretty high geared coming out of the hole because there is no convertor to assist w the launch, the clutch needs to be pretty good to handle any traction. 727s are 2.45 but the convertor really helps w the launch . Modern converters like a dynamic or ptc you can cruise like a stock convertor but get a race car launch...that's why it's the best of both.
I'm not exactly sure what you are saying here. Is it an overdrive 4 speed manual transmission? If so, should be 3.09 first, and 0.73 OD. I would go 3.55. That would be like a 4.10 behind the more typical 2.66 first gear 4 spds. But your tire is really tall.
I would use the 3:55 all day long, if you like to have fun with the car...
I missed the 4 speed overdrive post. They have a huge jump between the gears.l basically a 3 speed w od added. The 3.09 first isn't going to care much whether it has 3.23 or 3.55s. IMO the od 4th is going to work better w 3.55s. To cruise around and start in first the 3.09 is really, really low and slow w either gear.
sorry the tires are 275-60-15 not 275-70-15 and O/D with 4 speed
