Today I took my first run out on the roads after registering my 66 Belvedere (440 and 727 trans) in the UK.

All was going well for about 4 miles until I pulled up to a junction and it stalled. This was just after gunning it down a small freeway.

It would then not re start at all, turned over fine, but would not fire.

The engine had been running quite well apart from an occasional misfire under kick down or full throttle.

Got it recovered and decided to have a few beers and I'm going to check a few things tomorrow.

Are there any common faults to check for?

I can verify the following:

The transmission safety feature seems to be working; it won't turn over if you leave it in D.

There is fuel in the fuel filter, and the carb smells like there is plenty of fuel after me cranking it over.

So I'm suspecting ignition...

I currently have points and condenser with no electronic ignition, and the plugs look a bit old (from the outside at least)

I have pertronix ignitor 2, a new coil and some new plugs I plan to use tomorrow.

I presume I need to check the power feeds for the coil etc??

Sorry for the rambling post....

first check the ballast...jumper it and if it starts....life is good...oh...then change it

Thanks, sorted now. I charged the battery over night and it started instantly this morning.

Further investigation showed that with the ignition on the coil was getting 4.8V at the positive terminal, which is a bit low?

There was 12.5 volts to the ballast. There was one poorly crimped terminal and the combination of my low battery and or bad ballast caused me problems.

I have junked the ballast now and installed pertronix igniter 2 and a new coil, all seems good.
