i have a 84 ramcharger 360 w/727 tranny.lately when i put it in drive or low or reverse i have to rev the motor up so high just to get it to move.(crawl).i have check the fluid and it looks like it is burnt.when it does get warmed up and i take off down the street, it feels like the truck is pushing against itself just to get up to speed.would the problem be in the torque convertor, front pump,or the little catalytic converter plugged(i plan on taking that off).i was planning on changing filter and tranny fluid or is that too little too late?

if the fluid is brown and smells burnt, the bands are probably toasted.the fluid has been overheated and in my experiences, once they reach that point, only a rebuild can save it. you can spend the money and change the fluids but you may be pissing in the wind. its only a matter of time. i would find another one now if this is your driver. if not , get it rebuilt.

i was actually thinking of finding another one to replace it when the problems started arising.

Sounds like at a minimum your low/reverse band is slipping. Burnt fluid usually means excessive heat, which slippage will cause. Sounds like a rebuild/replacement is definitely in order. If you go the rebuild route, they are not as complicated as people make them seem. Just get a factory service manual and go through it step by step.

And remember that the transmission needs to be serviced from time to time as well. Along with fluid and filter changes, the bands need to be adjusted from to compensate for the eventual wear of the friction material.

i'm not that talented when it cones to trannys.there is a guy close by that does nothing but trans rebuilds.i also forgot to say when i check the fluid one time, the fluid was as black as engine oil on the dipstick.that was when i brought it from storage to my house(5 blocks).

the advantage of being built dodge ram tough.

If you get another trans. make sure it is good. A used one may not be any better than the one you have, it is a crap shoot. Take any used trans. to get it checked before installing it. Nothing worse than changing a trans. and then having to pull it again to do what could have been done before installing it.

Wish you lived closer, I have two recently rebuilt 727s with the transfer cases. I rolled my RamCharger about a month after installing the new 360 and rebuilt transmission. I'm also parting out an 86 ram 4x4 truck, the old 318 is shot, but the trans only had a year of use on it since it was rebuilt.

just a quick update.Decided to go ahead and change the tranny filter and fluid with a new gasket. The old filter was so plugged when i took it off. After i replaced everything,i tried it out in my driveway and it shifts into reverse and drive like it's supposed to now.haven't tried it on the highway yet(expired tags). But for now i don't have to rev the motor up so high to get it to move.Keeping my fingers crossed.

Did you try adjusting the bands while you were in there?? They can be adjusted, if the fluid was burnt they were slipping and probably need it.

no i did not,i'm not really a tranny expert.i'm still waiting to paint it but will see how it does on the highway.if i need to i will take it to the guy i know that does work on them.I can take them out and put them in.
